Sydenham Street United Church

Sydenham Street United Church God’s love is for everyone. We celebrate diversity, inclusivity and abundant life, informed by Jesus’ teaching and The Bible

82 Sydenham St. Kingston

Sydenham Street United Church is an inviting haven in a hurried world. We are a landmark in historic downtown Kingston, part of The United Church of Canada. We are an Affirming congregation, celebrating more than 200 years of faith since our founding as a Methodist congregation in 1811. Our historic building welcomes you, as it has welcomed generations of worshippers and musicians: we are among the finest concert halls in the area, a favoured venue for concerts and events.

Some new faces, same incredible spirit of community. 💛

The Food Voucher Program is powered by a wonderful team of Sydenham Street United volunteers who give their time to help support neighbours in our community.

We’re so grateful to have some new volunteers joining the team - Julian and Eric!

We are thankful for everyone who helps keep this important program going each week. Welcome! 👋❤️

🌱 We’re growing our team!

Sydenham Street United Church at The Spire is looking for an enthusiastic Growing Spirits Coordinator to help lead our children’s program on Sunday mornings.

This is a wonderful opportunity for someone who enjoys working with children and bringing creativity, compassion and curiosity to exploring spirituality and community. Crafts, music, movement, cooking, conversation - there’s lots of room to make the program your own! 💚

✨ 3–4 hours per week
✨ $25/hour
✨ Sundays, September–June
✨ Small class size with support from our church community

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dear friend and devoted volunteer, Mary LeRoy.

For so many years, Mary was a familiar, welcoming face at Sydenham Street United Church’s Food Voucher Program at The Spire. Her kindness, compassion, and dedication touched the lives of countless people in our community. She gave so generously of her time, always with a warm smile and a caring heart, making everyone who walked through our doors feel seen and valued.

Mary was much more than a volunteer, she was an integral part of our community and our family. Her presence brought comfort, friendship, and joy to those she served and to all of us who had the privilege of working alongside her including her friends and fellow volunteers, Marylil and Patricia.

Her absence will be deeply felt. The Food Voucher Program simply won’t be the same without her, and neither will our church or The Spire. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness that will continue to inspire us every Tuesday and beyond.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held:
🕊️ Wednesday, August 12
🕊️ 1PM
🕊️ Sydenham Street United Church at The Spire

Donations in Mary’s memory may be made to the Sydenham Street United Church Benevolent Fund, supporting the Food Voucher Program she cared so deeply about.

Mary, thank you for your unwavering generosity, your friendship, and your heart for others. You will be profoundly missed, lovingly remembered, and never forgotten. ❤️

As we approach the first anniversary of The United Church of Canada's apology to the 2S and LGBTQIA+ community on August 8, 2025, we share an apology worship resource, adapted from Gathering worship materials.

This includes theological reflection on apology and forgiveness, exploring what it means to practice a “living apology,” and includes worship elements and questions to help communities move from words into faithful action.

Together, these offerings are intended to help communities meaningfully embody the apology and discern faithful next steps—grounding this work in worship, relationship, and a shared commitment to justice.

It is within this spirit that we return to the apology itself, and the ongoing call it places before us:

Living Spirit, you call each of us by name; you call us Loved. Together, you call us Wonderfully Diverse. You call us into community, into church, into this time of listening, healing, and hope.

Living Christ, may our hearts beat with your compassion for all who have lived on the margins because of who they are, who they love, how they express themselves, or the courage with which they live authentically. May we walk together in your way of love and justice, where all are welcomed, valued, and celebrated.

Thank you for calling us to be part of a church where people of every culture, ability, age, income, sexuality, gender identity, and expression are gathered into one joyful community.

Renew our hearts, our church, and our world, that together we may become living, breathing celebrations of your love. Amen.
