St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church

St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Since 1817, this congregation has been serving the Christ and community in downtown Kingston. Come and join us in worship, work and service! St. Sir John A.

Andrew's Presbyterian Church has served Jesus Christ and the people of Kingston since half a century before Confederation (July 1, 1867) which created Canada. The year 2017 will be our 200th Anniversary for which we are grateful to God. We have been served by 11 Ministers and several staff members during our storied history. This is the founding congregation for a theological college which grew in

to the world-famous Queens University. MacDonald, who was raised as a child and as an adult was active as a professing member of St. Andrew's, became the first Prime Minister of Canada and, incidentally, seconded the motion of this congregation to create Queen's. We are urban, downtown, warm-hearted and open-minded. We welcome and embrace thoughtful skeptics, true believers, doubters distinguished by the quality of their questions and sinners like ourselves who have the potential of being saved by the undeserved favour of God. We believe: in God's general revelation in creation, in God's specific revelation as recorded in the Bible, and in God's special revelation through Jesus Christ who is One with the Father and the Spirit. We think of the Church as the living body of the Living Lord. We know that the Church is a world-sized community of which we are but a part. We believe that the Church is both biblically and historically informed; the revealing of God in the Bible is lived out in over 2000 years of Christian witness and service. We respect and honour the past, we live and move and have our being in the everyday present, and we move toward the future with confidence that God is the God of history, who is able to work all things together for those who love God.

Baptismal font in St. Andrew's 'He took them up into his arms and blessed them' (Mark 10:16). These are the words that surround the top of baptismal font of St. Andrew's, and they shall be very much before us all this Sunday. We will gather to celebrate the baptism of Emery. We will remember our own baptism. And we will rejoice for Emery and ourselves how Christ has adopted us as his brothers and sisters and taken us up into the embrace of the Holy One....

Painting in the style of a Greek medieval religious icon. Now let the vault of heaven resound, in praise of love that doth abound. Christ hath triumphed, hallelujah. As we continue in the joy of this season of Easter, we will explore through May some of the images of the Church that come to us from the New Testament. We begin this morning with one from our Lord himself, 'I am the vine, you are the branches' (John 15:5). ...

Photo by Julielee Stitt We continue to follow the story of the first Easter from the Gospel according to Luke, with the 'Walk to Emmaus' (Luke 24:13-35). It is a wonderful narrative that speaks of lives changed by the Risen Lord, then and now. One of the hymns we will sing this Sunday is a prayer that surely we all lift up - ...

Over the past two years, members of our congregation and our families have gone ahead of us. Many of us were unable to gather to give God thanks, or to gather with limitations of location and numbers. St. Andrew's held a service on Saturday April 9 to look back, bring our gratitude to God, and be strengthened by God's promises. It was a very moving hour. The Order of Service is found below, and the recording is found at

"Hosanna in the Highest". Hanna-Cheriyan Varghese. 2007 The movement of this scene is wonderful. Varghese was a Malaysian artist who often painted from her deep Christian faith. Like in this painting. Jesus is at the centre, but where is headed, to whom is he travelling? This is not just 'the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem' - I feel Varghese challenging me to consider 'the entry of Jesus into my life'....
