It is a sad fact that lately housing has become a major issue for an increasing amount of Canadians, across the country and here at home. Habitat for Humanity Kingston Limestone Region, a not-for-profit, charitable organization has long held the mission of helping families build and improve places to call home. They mobilize local volunteers, community members, donors, and corporate partners and the affordable housing they create plays a critical role in strengthening our community and creating the dignity of home ownership for families who otherwise would not be able to. It's a fantastic model that still sees Habitat families paying a mortgage, but interest free and back to Habitat. We're proud ot have them among our supported organizations and recently our Grand Knight Patrick Greenwood (left) and Br. Chris Catry (right) dropped by their ReStore on Gardiners Road with our latest donation, proudly and happily accepted by Gary Lees, the CEO.
If you want to help others realize the dream of home ownership, join the Knights today to help them and hundreds of others in our region!

Since 1985, The Food Sharing Project has been providing nutritious food to schools across KFL&A. Educators, and research, tell us that students with access to healthy food can focus better on their academic tasks, are more engaged in their learning, and have more positive social interactions. Nutrition programs at schools can take many forms but they all offer healthy food that is accessible to any student who needs nutrition, in a stigma–free environment, supported by caring adults. Brs. Chris Catry (left) and Frank Cuvelier (right) were on hand recently to deliver our most recent donation to Executive Director Andy Mills.
Our Council is overjoyed to be able to support a much needed and exceedingly well run organization that provides food to 88 schools across four school boards - volunteers pack over $20,000 of food every week, over half a million dollars of food over the course of the school year.

We're so pleased to count Ryandale Transitional Housing among our supported charities. They ensure safe accommodation and support access to essential support services for people in KFL&A who are struggling with the economic, social and often emotional challenges of being without permanent housing. By fostering resilience, they create futures where no one is left behind due to economic hardship, social barriers, or trauma. They serve clients without prejudice, especially with respect to any past history of addiction, incarceration or mental illness, though clients must meet standards for addictions and level of risk to the community. It is this mindset that has made them so invaluable and a critical part of combatting housing challenges in the region.
Our Grand Knight Patrick Greenwood (right rear) and Recorder Chris Catry (second from left) visited Patti Ridlon, the Operations Director, Caitlyn, the Housing Navigator/Alumni Support, Dave the Manager, and Mandy the Program Coordinator to drop off our Council's most recent donation.

Cots and dividers. Just some fabric, some metal tubing, a few 2'x4's, a few casters and some nuts & bolts. Not a big deal, one might think. But to the men who can come in to Veronica's Veil and spend a night sleeping in a clean, warm, safe place, they mean kindness, compassion and the knowledge that others do care about their welfare. Our Council remains fiercely proud of our ongoing support to Veronica's Veil, and not just in the volunteer Knights who do shifts there, but again this year as we've provided new cots to augment the cots and dividers we purchased.
"For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’ "

The Knights of Columbus, like most charitable organizations, has created a series of awards to add further incentive to selfless works, and to recognize noteworthy efforts by a specific Knight, or a certain Council which may stand out. The Father McGivney Award is named for our founder, the Blessed Michael McGivney, who has been beatified and is only one step from canonization. This award recognizes excellence in a Council’s membership growth and to earn it, a Council must meet or exceed its yearly membership quota, which is a 6% increase in the Council’s membership as of 1st July of that year. We are aware that our efforts have also attracted the attention of some men from the Parish who are now proudly Knights in our Council. At a recent District training event, our Grand Knight Patrick Greenwood was honoured to be called forward and accept the Father McGivney Award on behalf of St. Joseph's Knights of Columbus Council 11670 from State Advocate Earl DePass.
Our question is simple for any male parishioner 18 or older reading this - why haven't you joined yet?

The Grand Knight, Officers & all St. Joseph's Knights extend their most sincere wishes for a happy, safe, and blessed Christmas.

"And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

This past Saturday, our Knights, with many other volunteers from the St. Joseph's Catholic Women's League and other parishioners, helped to delivery 45 Christmas Baskets to local families who are experiencing challenges. Each basket contained a great deal of healthy nutritious food suited for a few holiday feasts, and some gifts. "Love your neighbour as yourself" as Jesus taught us, and beyond religion, it's a call for societal justice, community support, and empathy for the vulnerable.
You can help - support your Knights by becoming one today!

Christmas is a season of giving. And the Knights of St. Joseph’s have truly embraced the love of giving. This past weekend, following masses, our Knights presented a cheque representing another donation from the Council toward the Parish Hall Expansion. This additional $20,000 now brings our total to $30,000 we’ve provided to the hall. Hint: we ain’t done yet, either!

While unfortunate, the need for food assistance is at an all time high in our city, province and nation. Fortunately, there are fantastic organizations like St Vincent de Paul, which has been supporting Individuals and families in the Kingston community for over 50 years, working together to create a kinder world. They are incidentally are moving into their new building on December 1st. Our Grand Knight Patrick Greenwood recently paid a visit to Executive Director Judy Fyfe and presented our donation of $2,000. The staff noted how our donation came at the perfect time to assist with the move.
