Many thanks – to everyone who showed up on Saturday for our Christmas Bazaar! Everything went fairly smoothly, the bakers’ offerings looked delicious, lunch was enjoyed by all, and people were impressed by the Christmas Shop, the collectibles and the children’s cookie-decorating table. All in all, over $3,200 was raised. Thank you! So much of the credit for this success goes to Judy Miller for her planning skills, her leadership before, during and after the Bazaar, and her indefatigable energy. Thank you, Judy.

Sarah (Susan Richardson’s daughter) asked to share this message for everyone.

Dear Friends of Susan:

Please share with others as I am not sure I have everyone's emails:

My mom Susan passed away on November 9th at Bridgepoint Hospital Palliative Care Unit in Toronto. She had been ill with Glioblastoma brain cancer and fought hard. We will be holding a celebration of life and an Irish wake on Friday December 13th. Please see the details at the end of the obituary posted here by the Funeral home (link below). Please come join us to celebrate Susan if you can. Oh and she specified in her notes for me "No sad black clothes!" - so feel free to wear whatever you want in the spirit of Susan!

Coming up at St. Paul’s on November 10th 11:00am

Canadian Council of Churches Sunday

On November 10th St. Albans Anglican and St. Paul’s Presbyterian will join together in ecumenical friendship to welcome Pastor Peter Noteboom, General Secretary of the Canadian Council of Churches.

Near the end of World War 2, nations were struggling and the world wanted peace. In a spirit of unity, representatives of civil society and churches were looking for ways to express this desire. Thus were born the United Nations (1945), the World Council of Churches (1948) and the Canadian Council of Churches (1948), among other groups.

Fast forward to 2024 and the Canadian Council of Churches is commemorating 80 years of history. Part of the campaign to promote and grow the Council are visits by the General Secretary to meet, greet and speak with members of churches big and small across the country.

St. Paul’s is fortunate to be hosting Mr. Noteboom, who will participate in the worship service and lead a conversation about The Church in Canada Today over lunch provided by St. Paul’s.

The service will be led by Nathan Townend and Father Don Bailey, with lay leaders from both churches. Stephen Kendall, who served as President of the Canadian Council of Churches from 2018-2021 will preach.

The Canadian Council of Churches is a broad and inclusive ecumenical body, representing 26-member churches including Anglican, Eastern and Roman Catholic, Evangelical, Free Church, Eastern and Oriental Orthodox, and Historic Protestant traditions. Together these member churches comprise 85% of the Christians in Canada.

Please join us for this unique opportunity.

To the Members and Friends of St. Paul’s Amherst Island

From Rev. Lynne Donovan, Interim-Moderator

Greetings-

I wanted to speak to you words of encouragement and congratulations as we enter yet another year facing the challenges of Covid. Yes, it was, to quote Queen Elizabeth, another “annus horribilis” in many respects but it was also a year when you put your best foot forward as you got “creative about connecting”. And, friends, in this era, in every era, that is what the gospel calls us to do. I have been doing some significant reading to remind myself of the context in which Jesus taught. It was a context that made our context look like a walk in the park. Rome and its Caesar ruled with brutality and injustice. The Jewish community was a further target of the Empire because the Jewish community refused to acknowledge Caesar as Lord of the world and so the Jewish community was always vulnerable to Roman cruelty.

In this context where the average peasant consumed 700 calories a day (if they were lucky), the only hope for survival was friendship and community. However, in a context of scarcity and brutality, relationships between families and tribes were often driven by mistrust and scarcity. The ancient theological, cultural and gender divides made everyone vulnerable. Jesus spoke to this world providing a vision of community and belonging so as to address this profound vulnerability. His disciples and members of the early church were not driven by creeds or religious demands but by an invitation to be generous with one another and to include everyone at the table—in their lives and their relationships to be a parable for the love of God. It was a vision for friendship and belonging that gave people hope. It was a vision for being the Beloved community that gave people an anchor.

Last year you included so many in your circle of friends with your gifts of soup, cookies, etc. The work of the Pastoral Care Committee and the Community Outreach Committee will continue to be important as we move into 2022. If you wish to participate in the work of these committees which has to do with facilitating “creative connecting”, please speak to Nathan.

The Session in partnership with other folk on the Island, will determine how best to move forward to become a more inclusive worshipping community in 2022. Nathan will launch online Zoom Sunday services until you return to in person worship. This will give you all an opportunity to be in the room together, visit, make prayer requests, be strengthened by the encouragement of one another.

The church at its best is a sanctuary, a light, a model for generosity, a voice for justice. We have not always been our best. Sometimes it takes hard times to nurture and release the best teachings of Jesus.

With deep respect and admiration as you more and more shape your life around the ministry of Jesus.

Rev. Lynne Donovan ([email protected])

St. Paul’s regrets to advise that the joint Community Carol Service with St. Alban’s and the long-awaited live Nativity Scene planned for Saturday, December 18th, 2021 have been cancelled due to concerns about COVID and the need to keep our communty safe. Now, more than ever, we are encouraged to remember that the joy of Christmas lives in our hearts and is shared through the connections we make with others. Please reach out by calls and messages to those who might need a special boost during this Christmas season.

In person services at St. Paul’s are cancelled until January but Nathan hopes to arrange Christmas services once again on CJAI, Amherst Island Public Radio. Stand by for more information.
