Refusing to accept their weaknesses, the disciples enter the garden of Gethsemane with Jesus on the night He was betrayed. Jesus prepares for the trial through prayer, coming to God the Father for the strength to endure and to align Himself with the Father's will that will cost Jesus His life. The disciples prepare by sleeping, assuming that the challenge to come will be better met with a good rest. When the time comes, Jesus faces it head on, while the disciples lash out and flee into the darkness. In this failed watch, we discover if you won't face your weaknesses in private prayer, you will face them in public failure.

In the Olivet Discourse, Jesus commanded the disciples remain wakeful and watchful - little did they know that Jesus' command was going to apply to events that would take place that very week.

Today, we have begun our study of the Passion Narrative - The night Jesus was betrayed, up to His death on the cross. We begin at evening: The first watch. For the disciples, it is a failed watch. They won't listen to Jesus, and refuse to look deep inside themselves and see their weakness and need for grace. Despite all this, the evening watch is not only marked by their failure, but by the grace of a God who is not surprised by the weakness of His people.

Over the last few weeks we studied John chapter 11 - the raising of Lazarus, and the paradox of Jesus' love and Jesus' delay in the story. At the end of the account, we understand what Jesus was doing. We understand that He had a deeper purpose in the suffering and hardship Mary, Martha, and Lazarus experienced.

But what do we do when God doesn't explain to us why we are suffering? He seldom does. The bible teaches that hardship has a number of explanations, but it doesn't tell us how to interpret every form of suffering.

Today we contrast the clear-cut answer in John 11 against the book of Job, and see what it looks like to trust God even when He doesn't explain the situation.

Our friend and brother in Christ departed this world last week to be in the presence of the Lord. A memorial service will be held at our church building on Saturday, August 15th, at 1:00 PM, with refreshments to follow.

What do you do when Jesus doesn't show up the way you want Him to? When you face unanswered prayers, sudden goodbyes, and frustrated plans, how does that affect your faith? There is no shortage of difficulty to walk through in this life, but in our passage today, Jesus shows us how close He is to His people when they suffer. As our local church faces our own season of difficulty, Jesus is eager and willing to be invited into our grief that He might give hope to those who mourn.
