Please take a moment to watch and read the following message.
After a year of trying and relentless work to bring Camp OAC back from the devastation of the McDougall Creek Wildfire, we have regretfully been forced to defer reopening until 2025.
Camp OAC, which has been in operation since 1950, and is a ministry of the Anglican Diocese of Kootenay, devastatingly burnt to the ground on the second-last night of the camping season in August 2023, burning 28 structures. We want to put forth our deepest apologies to our staff, volunteers, campers, parents and community, however to guarantee the safety and satisfaction of all we are forced to defer.
Over the course of the past year, camp director Ian Dixon, Archbishop Lynne McNaughton, and a dedicated team of volunteers have overseen the work of securing necessary permits, overseeing remediation of the site, and replacing key infrastructure. However, due to difficult and costly circumstances such as archeological restrictions, environmental permits and required assessments on the property, Camp OAC will not be able to reopen for the 2024 season. .
As devastating as this news is, we are optimistic for the reopening of Camp for the summer of 2025, and have already put strong efforts towards rebuilding. Two cabin buildings have already been ordered and will be delivered to the site later this summer. Although camp will not look the same, we are sure that the atmosphere and community will continue to prosper.
Despite the significant tasks ahead, there's an undeniable assurance that the strength and love for Camp OAC will triumph over this tragedy.
