✝️ DON’T MAKE THIS MISTAKE IN YOUR PARISH.
WHY THE CHURCH MUST BE DARK BEFORE THE CANDLE PROCESSION
__________________
At the Easter Vigil, something dramatic is supposed to happen…

👉 The church is plunged into darkness
👉 And then a single flame enters

But in many parishes today?

👉 The lights are already on.

No darkness.
No contrast.
No impact.

And something powerful is lost.

✝️ 1. THE DARKNESS IS NOT OPTIONAL

The Church begins the Vigil in darkness on purpose.

Because:

👉 The world without Christ is dark
👉 Humanity without redemption is lost

This is not symbolism you can skip.

👉 It is the starting point of salvation history.

✝️ 2. THE PROCESSION IS THE RESURRECTION IN ACTION

When the Paschal Candle enters, the priest sings:

👉 “The Light of Christ.”

And the people respond:

👉 “Thanks be to God.”

This is not just a procession.

👉 It is a proclamation:

👉 Christ has risen… and Light has returned.

But if the church is already bright?

👉 The sign is weakened.
👉 The message is blurred.

✝️ 3. FROM ONE FLAME, THE WHOLE CHURCH IS TRANSFORMED

One candle enters.

Then:

One person lights another

Then another

Then another

Until the entire church glows.

This is the Gospel in action:

👉 Light spreads.
👉 Faith spreads.
👉 Christ transforms darkness.

But without initial darkness…

👉 You cannot see the transformation.

✝️ 4. THIS IS NOT A TECHNICAL DETAIL, IT IS THEOLOGY

The Church is precise for a reason.

Darkness - Light

Death - Life

Silence - Proclamation

If you remove the darkness…

👉 You remove the drama of salvation.

And the Vigil becomes:

👉 Just another ceremony… instead of the most powerful liturgy of the year.

✝️ 5. WHAT PARISHES MUST UNDERSTAND

This is not about aesthetics.

👉 It is about meaning.

Turning off the lights says:

👉 “We are waiting.”
👉 “We are in darkness.”

Lighting the candles says:

👉 “Christ has conquered.”

If both happen at the same time?

👉 The message is lost.

✝️ FINAL MESSAGE

Don’t make this mistake.

If your parish skips the darkness…

👉 It skips the story.

Because the Easter Vigil is not just something we attend.

👉 It is something we enter.

We begin in darkness…

👉 So that we can truly experience the Light.

The Church begins in total darkness so that when one flame appears, you don’t just see it…

👉 You feel the Resurrection.
