Diocese of New Westminster
ANGLICAN CHURCH OF CANADA
Dear people of the Diocese of New Westminster,
It is with deep sadness that I inform you that earlier today, Archdeacon Philippa Pride died as a result of her ongoing illness with cancer. She was surrounded by family and friends and knew their love and prayers as she left this world to pass into the next. May she rest in God’s peace.
Philippa was deeply loved in the diocese as she had so many connections with a good number of the parishes in her time here. She had a beautiful sense of humour to go along with her compassion and concern and this greatly influenced the life of our entire diocese. Her time as Executive Archdeacon was extremely short and I know that she had wanted to grow into the position more and more.
I am profoundly saddened and grief-filled that she has died. She had become a good friend and colleague. I miss her around the Synod Office and the support she offered to me. I miss her commitment to the gospel of Christ and that twinkle in her eye. We were both part of the delegation from the diocese that went to the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Philippines for the consecration of Bishop Benny in 2022. We had many adventures there together and the people of that diocese will also share our grief at Philippa’s death.
At this point the arrangements for Archdeacon Philippa’s funeral have not been made. We will ensure that word gets out as quickly as possible once those have been settled.
Please keep her daughter, Caitlin, in your prayers, along with the rest of Philippa’s family and many friends. There will be many people grieving Philippa as she touched people’s lives in profound ways. May we all know God’s presence and the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the days ahead.
Loving and merciful God, we entrust Philippa to your mercy. You loved her greatly in this life; now that she is freed from all its cares, give her happiness and peace for ever. The old order has passed away; welcome her now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus, your Son, and the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.
God grant us to share in the inheritance of his saints in glory; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be with us, now and always. Amen.
Grace and Peace,
+John Stephens
