WHAT EVERY CATHOLIC SHOULD KNOW AND DO NOW!
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, this is my message to every Catholic on the Passing of the Holy Father, Pope Francis. With deep sorrow, the Church and the whole world has learned of the passing of our Holy Father, Pope Francis. As we mourn the death of the Vicar of Christ on earth, we are reminded of the enduring truth that while popes may pass from this life, the Church founded by Christ remains steadfast, guided by the Holy Spirit.
What Happens When the Pope Dies?
Upon the death of a pope, the Church enters a period known as the Sede Vacante-Latin for “the seat being vacant.” During this time:
The governance of the universal Church shifts to the College of Cardinals, who manage day-to-day matters but may not make decisions reserved to the Pope.
The Camerlengo, a cardinal appointed by the pope, oversees the papal household and prepares for the election of the next pope. The current Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church is Cardinal Kevin Farrell. He was appointed to the role by Pope Francis in 2019. Farrell also serves as the prefect of the Dicastery for Laity, Family, and Life.
A conclave will be convened in the Vatican, during which the cardinal electors, under the age of 80, will prayerfully and confidentially select the next successor of St. Peter. This is a solemn and sacred process, guided by centuries of tradition and the ever-present work of the Holy Spirit. As of April 21, 2025, there are 138 cardinals under the age of 80 who are eligible to vote in a papal conclave. These cardinals make up the majority of the College of Cardinals.
What Should We Do as the Faithful?
1. Pray: Let us lift Pope Francis in prayer, asking God to grant him eternal rest and reward him for his faithful service. We also pray for the Cardinals who will gather to elect a new Shepherd, that the Holy Spirit may guide them.
2. Remain United: The Church is not without a Shepherd, for Christ is ever her Head. Let us stay united in faith, hope, and charity, supporting one another in this time of transition.
3. Trust in the Holy Spirit: Jesus promised that the gates of hell would not prevail against His Church (Mt. 16:18). The Holy Spirit has never failed the Church in her need, and will again raise up a worthy successor to lead us.
In moments like these, we draw close as the Body of Christ, confident in the Lord’s providence and the unbroken continuity of the Church. Let us be a people of hope, faith, and prayer as we await the election of our next Holy Father.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
In Christ our Lord,
Fr Paul Ajong of the BVM
