Our kin, the flora and fauna are calling,
The earth, the sea, and the sky join in,
Mother earth is hurting
they cry
We need you to act with us
they call
We need you to join us in the restoring Creation
So that our mother may flourish once more.
We need you, they plead.
Discerning God,
How do we faithfully respond to these calls?
[moment of silence]
What would you have us do?
How would you like us to act?
Guide us, we pray and lead us towards transformative actions.
Amen.

If you're not sure what to do for Lent, begin with a simple act of compassion.

No dramatic plans or perfect resolutions.
But five minutes a day.
Five minutes of silence.
Five minutes of quiet prayer.
A small act of kindness.
A quiet pause to be with the Lord.

You do not need a perfect plan.
Just begin.

Many of us have stayed up late to witness the arrival of the new year. It’s all about endings, beginnings, and imaginings. Perhaps we are pondering the passing of time by marking the years. Or maybe the new year brings with it the mixed feelings of settling into the winter season
as the frozen ground sleeps beneath us and we, too, are invited to consider a soulful hibernation of sorts.

The readings for today are rich for
pondering—the noticing of seasons, the awareness of our place in God’s mindfulness, the imagining of God’s new heaven and new earth, and of course,
wonderings about how following the Way of Jesus inspires right relations and justice.

Maybe today is a day for fewer words and more silence—to wonder, to ponder, to “be.”

Ecclesiastes 3:1–13
For everything there is a season.

Psalm 8 (VU pp. 730–732)
What are humans that God is mindful of them?

Revelation 21:1–6a
A new heaven and a new earth.

Matthew 25:31–46
Judging the sheep and the goats.
