Paul, the Faithful Steward of God’s Grace

“Who then is the faithful and prudent manager … to give them their allowance of food at the proper time?” Luke 12:42

Jesus describes a faithful manager whose task is to distribute the food provided by his master. Paul understood his ministry in this way: as a steward of God’s grace, entrusted with nourishing God’s household with the gospel of Christ. His mission was not to burden people with demands to earn righteousness, but to proclaim God’s righteousness freely given through faith in Jesus Christ.

The unfaithful manager dominates rather than nourishes. Likewise, when grace is replaced by demands for self-righteousness, the gospel becomes a burden rather than good news. The faithful steward does not demand that the hungry earn their bread. He feeds them with the riches of God’s grace.

Beating or Feeding?

“He begins to beat the other slaves, men and women...” Luke 12:45

We beat ourselves and others when we use God's commandments to condemn, threaten, and control rather than nourish with grace.

Jesus came not to beat us with the law, but to feed us with the good news of righteousness freely given through faith in him.

Are we beating ourselves and others with condemnation, or feeding them with the grace of Christ?

The Master Who Becomes the Servant

“He will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them.” Luke 12:37

Jesus reveals an astonishing reversal: under the law, the servant serves the master; under grace, the Master serves the servants.

Under the law, we seek righteousness through our obedience. Under grace, Christ gives us righteousness through his obedience.

The servants sit at the table while the Master serves them. This is the heart of the Gospel: we do not earn righteousness through our works; we receive it through faith in Christ.

The Freedom of Belonging

“Give therefore … to God the things that are God’s.” —Matthew 22:21

The old Adam uses the law to justify himself: My obedience proves my worth; my failure establishes my guilt. This is our Babylon—a captivity from which we cannot free ourselves by trying harder.

As Cyrus opened the way home for Israel, he foreshadows Christ, who delivers us from self-justification into the freedom of grace. We bear God’s image and are invited to entrust ourselves to him.

In Christ, we move from proving our righteousness to receiving it from God and living faithfully as his own. Obedience becomes the fruit of belonging, rather than the price we pay for it.

The Fear of Losing Our Identity as the Beloved

“Do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.”
— Luke 12:7

Perhaps our deepest fear is losing our identity as the beloved. This fear drives us to seek approval, hide our weaknesses, defend ourselves, and prove our righteousness.

This is the leaven of the Pharisees: the illusion that love must be earned and maintained through performance.

But Jesus reveals a Father who knows us completely and loves us without requiring us to hide.

The old man lives in fear of losing belovedness. The new man lives in freedom because his identity as the beloved is secured in Christ.

Prayer as the Fruit of Justification

“While we still were sinners Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8 (NRSV)

The old self approaches prayer as an attempt to become worthy of God’s love. Even prayer becomes another work through which we seek to justify ourselves.

But the Law exposes our inability to establish our own righteousness, while the Gospel reveals that God loves us while we are still sinners.

St. Teresa of Ávila discovered that her sinfulness was not a reason to withdraw from prayer but an invitation to enter more deeply into God’s friendship.

We do not pray to become worthy of God’s love. We pray because we are already loved in Christ.

Prayer is not the means of obtaining justification, but the fruit of receiving it through faith.

The Flesh: Fixing the Leak or Changing the Source?

“And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” — Galatians 5:24 (NRSV)

Imagine a leaking gas pipe. You can keep covering the holes, but the gas continues to escape because the source remains unchanged.

Likewise, we try to control anger, jealousy, pride, and selfishness through our own efforts. But the deeper problem is the flesh—our old way of trusting ourselves to secure our needs and acceptance.

Christ did not come to help us patch the leaks but to give us a new source of life.

When we realize that we already belong to Christ, we can stop relying on fleshly strategies to meet our needs and entrust ourselves to God.

Crucifying the flesh means surrendering self-reliance and living by the Spirit, trusting that our worth and acceptance are already secure in Christ.

The Souls Who Think They Need No Mercy

“God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” — Luke 18:13

When we pray the rosary, we pray the Fatima prayer, “O My Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell and lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy.”
Who are those most in need of God’s mercy? Those who do not recognize their need for Christ. Those who believe they can become righteous through their own efforts. The greatest obstacle to receiving mercy may be the belief that I do not need it.
So am I praying only for those I consider sinners, or also for the self-righteousness that may still be hiding in my own heart?
