Holy Week Chronological Readings
Sunday:
Matthew 21:1-17; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-48; John 12:12-50.
* Jesus enters Jerusalem as King (cf: Zech 9:9).
* Jesus is worthy of worship because of who He is and what He has done.
Monday:
Matthew 21:18-26:2; Mark 11:12-19; Luke 20:1- 21:38
* Matthew conflates Monday and Tuesday in to his account
* Jesus enters into debate with the religious leaders
* Matthew’s account lists Jesus' sermon of “Seven Woes!”
Tuesday:
Mark 11:20-13:37; Luke 22:1-6;
* Big question: Who is Jesus?
* Monday and Tuesday are Temple teaching days.
Wednesday:
Matt 26:5-16; Mark 14:1-11.
* Luke and John do not comment on this day.
* Jesus is in Bethany in Simon the leper’s home where He is anointed with oil
* Judas is enraged and sets out to betray Jesus.
Thursday:
Matthew 26:17-75; Mark 14:12-72; Luke 22:7-62; John 13 –John 18:27
* The longest sections because this was the longest time for our Lord.
* John gives us an intimate look into His teaching as He prepares to die.
* Late that night he was arrested in Gethsemane, examined first by Annas (John) then by the Sanhedrin, then Pilate, sent to Herod, back to Pilate then turned over to be crucified.
Friday:
Matthew 27:1-61; Mark 15:1-47; Luke 22:63-23:56; John 18:28-John 19:42
* This is the day that Jesus is crucified.
* He is nailed to the cross at 9am…….He hangs till noon when darkness falls upon the land for 3 hours. (Matt)
* Jesus dies before nightfall and the start of the Passover…and is hurriedly buried.
Saturday:
Matthew 27:62-65
* Only Matthew has info on this day, the rest are silent - The Lord is dead!
Sunday:
Matthew 28:1-20; Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-49; John 20:1-31
* Jesus appears first to the women who announce the news to the disciples who don’t believe them. Peter and John race to the tomb
* The Lord appears to 2 disciples on the road to Emmaus. (Lk 24) then to the whole group.
