We learned a lot about what ministry is and isn’t last week and how much our own spiritual growth influences the practice of ministry. We’re continuing this week with Part 3 of The Practice of Ministry.

You can be the most dedicated person at church — never missing a Sunday, always on time, always in position — and still have done zero ministry.

Ministry isn’t the task. It’s not the keyboard. It’s not the soundboard. It’s not the camera.

Ministry is service aimed at helping people grow in the knowledge of God’s Word. Evangelism. Discipleship. Overflow from your own spiritual growth.

The litmus test? If a non-Christian could step in and do your role effectively — and nobody would notice the difference — what you’re doing is organizational service. Valuable, yes. But not ministry.

Ministry requires that YOU are growing. That you’re praying. That you’re studying. That you’re asking God, “How can what I’m doing help this person grow?”

The applause doesn’t mean you’re ministering. The busyness doesn’t mean you’re ministering. The years don’t mean you’re ministering.

So this isn’t a call to quit your role. We need people to serve.

It’s a call to examine your heart. Because ministry is an overflow — and you can’t pour from an empty cup.
