What does it mean to stand for Christ in a world that pressures us to compromise?

The reality is that it's extremely difficult for Christians of any age, but how about those impressionable teen years?

In our third sermon in the book of Daniel, we discover how Daniel (likely around 15 years of age at the time) remained faithful in the heart of Babylon through conviction, competence, and continuance.

His circumstances changed, but his allegiance to God did not.

Yet our hope is not ultimately in our ability to stand firm, but in Jesus Christ, who remained faithful to the very end and gave His life for our salvation.

We are not saved because we stand.
We stand because we have been saved.

Whose are you?

More than ever,  the world wants to shape your identity, capture your heart, and draw you away from God.

Daniel 1:3 -21 reminds us that we can live in this world without letting the world shape who we are.

Our identity isn’t found in what the world says, but in whose we are:

Jesus Christ

Pastor Ian will continue our series "Faithful" in the Book of  Daniel  this sunday morning at 10:30 am at 350 Albright Rd with a look at Daniel 1:3–8 -  "Remember Whose You Are"

What do we do when God seems silent?

When financial troubles loom large.
When diagnoses hit hard.
When a sudden loss takes you out at the knees.

When suffering, uncertainty, or circumstances beyond our control leave us asking, “Where are You, Lord?”

Daniel chapter 1 takes us to Jerusalem under siege.
God’s people appear defeated.
Babylon seems to have won. Even the treasures of God’s temple are carried away.

But then come four powerful words:
“And the Lord delivered…”

What to us looks like defeat is still under God’s sovereign rule.

And the book of Daniel ultimately points us to Christ, the One who appeared defeated at the cross, yet rose victorious and reigns forever.

So.

Where is the Lord?

He is faithful. He is at work. He reigns.

In a world that at times seems utterly shrouded in darkness, what does it mean for a Christian to shine?

In Philippians 2:15, the Apostle Paul calls us to “shine like stars in the sky” in the midst of a dark and broken world.

But what gets in the way of our shine?
Grumbling and arguing.

Where are we called to shine?
Right in the midst of the darkness.

And what makes us shine more brightly?
Holding fast to, and holding out, the Word of Life.

A Christian who shines isn’t a perfect person.

A church that shines isn’t a perfect church.

It is people who reflect the light of Christ through gratitude instead of grumbling, faithfulness instead of compromise, and love instead of isolation.

And the darker the night, the brighter the stars.

So?

Shine!

Christian community is more than simply gathering in the same place.

It means belonging, being known, restoring one another, carrying each other’s burdens, practicing humility, and keeping the Word of Christ at the centre of our lives.

We were never meant to walk the Christian life alone.

When someone falls, we restore them gently.

When someone is carrying a heavy burden, we help carry it.

When pride rises, we point one another back to Christ.

And when we gather, we open the Word together.

Ultimately, Christian community flows from the One who carried the burden we could never carry ourselves.

Christ for us.

And because Christ is for us, we are there for one another.

As we come to the end of our almost two-year-long journey through 1 Corinthians, Paul leaves the church with a powerful picture of what the gospel should produce.

Not simply people who believe, but people who are changed.

We are not to be passive.

Paul reminds us that we have been saved to serve, called to love one another deeply, and invited to live with our hearts fixed on the return of Jesus.

After sixteen chapters of correction, encouragement, theology, failure, grace, the cross, and resurrection, Paul ends with something remarkably simple:

“The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you.”

What kind of church does Christ call us to be?

One that serves. Loves. And waits for Christ.

And until the trumpet sounds:

Maranatha.

Come, Lord Jesus.
