8. Matthew 1:18-25

This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). 24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus

Wisdom

As Christians we can gain knowledge through the study of God's word.

1. Job 12:12 is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding?

2. Psalm 37:30 the mouths of the righteous utter wisdom and their tongues speak what is just.

3. Proverbs 1:7 the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

4. Proverbs 3: 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.

5. Proverbs 4:6 Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. 7 The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

6. Proverbs 13: A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a mocker does not respond to rebukes.

7. Ecclesiastes 2:26 To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

8. 1 Corinthians 1:25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

9. Colossians 2:2 My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

10. James 3:17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.

11. James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

12. Proverbs 29: 11 Fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end.

13. Proverbs 14:1 The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.

15. Proverbs 19:20 Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise.

16. Proverbs 3:13 Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding,

Conclusion

Agape is the kind of love that is not of human origin.
Romans 5:10 “For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.” To die for an enemy is not what humans do. That is a God-type of love. Jesus died for us while we were still His enemies and while we were sinners. He loved us first. He took the initiative. We didn’t. Agape love is the kind of love that God had for us, while we were still dead in our sins. Agape love is a God love. This love is a love that Jesus displayed in laying down His life voluntarily for us; the type of love that the Father and Jesus have for One another; a love that is poured out for us like Jesus’ blood was poured out for sinners. If you have not repented and trusted in Christ, then you will have to pay for your own sins and since you cannot ever pay enough, you will be separated from God for all eternity. Why not reconcile to God today and bend the knee, repent of your sins, confess them to God, and then trust in Jesus Christ who loved (agapeo) enough to die for you.

Agape Love in the Scriptures

John 3:16. Love which is always the highest and most supreme . It is a love where one is willing to die for another, even if that person is unworthy, sinful, undeserving and is an enemy of the one who died for them.

Agape Love

This is the Greek word for love at its ultimate. Agape love is not like a brotherly love or a love between a husband and a wife. It is the most self-sacrificing love that there is. This type of love is the love that God has for His own children. This type of love is what was displayed on the cross by Jesus Christ. In John 3:16 it is written that “God so loved (agapao) the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” If a husband and father had a choice to have his family and his children die or for him to die and he chose to die for them. that is similar to what “agape” love is, but God’s love is even greater than this.

LOVE
God is love.

Jesus desired His church to be the place where the real life evidence of His life would be found.
John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, love one another: just as I have loved you. By this all people will know that you are my disciples.
You have a desire to grow in love
• Receiving love from God in order to love others.
• Being known by God and others through honest and transparent sharing
• The qualities of a good listener
• How to respond to others with kindness and grace

1. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
2. Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.
3. 1 Corinthians 16:14 Let all that you do be done in love.
4. 1 John 4:8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
5. John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
6. Matthew 22:36-40 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
7. Colossians 3:14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
8. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
9. John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
10. 1 Peter 4:8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.
11. 1 John 4:19 We love because he first loved us.
12. 1 John 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.
13. 1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
14. 1 Corinthians 13:13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
15. 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; ...
16. John 14:15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
17. Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,
18. Proverbs 10:12 Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses.
19. Ephesians 4:2 With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,
20. Luke 6:35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.
21. Romans 5:8 But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
22. 1 John 3:18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
23. Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
24. Romans 12:10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.
25. Romans 13:10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
26. Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
27. Matthew 5:44-48 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
