DIASPORA VIBES 3 – BLACK HISTORY HAMILTON
Saturday, December 6, 2025, 1 PM – 2:30 PM
Stewart Memorial Church, 114 John Street North Freedom Walk, Freedom Walk: Learn about this historic church and the role it has played in building and preserving the rich and dynamic history of African Canadians in Hamilton and area from the late 1800's to present.
Established in 1835, the church predates the city itself and has served as a historic site of prayer, protest, and resilience in the Black community. At the church, youth and community
historians will host storytelling a workshop on early Black history in Hamilton.
What to Expect
A dynamic presentation about Black history in Hamilton. The session presents Stewart Memorial Church as the lens through which Hamilton’s early Black story is told. Elders and youth from the church will guide the session, sharing lived knowledge, archival insight, and community memory.
Participants can expect:
• A workshop presentation on the roots of Black presence in Hamilton, centred on the church’s role as a historic site of faith, resistance, and community building.
• Historical displays highlighting key moments, figures, and milestones connected to Stewart Memorial Church.
• A light lunch and time for conversation with community members, elders, and youth facilitators.
