Preserving Human Voices and Faces: Pope Leo XIV's Magnifica Humanitas and the human person in the age of artificial intelligence

In May 2026, on the 135th anniversary of Rerum Novarum, Pope Leo XIV published Magnifica Humanitas, his encyclical on safeguarding the human person in a time of artificial intelligence. In this talk, Dr David Deane of Atlantic School of Theology reads the encyclical within the long tradition of Catholic social teaching, from Leo XIII's response to the industrial revolution to Leo XIV's response to the digital one. What does it mean to put the human person first when technology is reshaping work, desire and community? And what might the Church's tradition offer in answer? Come and be part of the conversation the encyclical itself invites.

Thursday, October 22, 7:00 pm, Barat Spirituality Centre, 1455 Summer Street. To register to attend in person or to watch the live stream, email [email protected].
