Affirming Education session thanks and Pride Parade

Thank you to everyone who attended our affirming session on social justice this past Sunday! We got permission from both speakers to live-stream it, so you can watch the session online! It was very informative and gave us lots of ideas for moving forward in our journey to becoming affirming! More details to come later in the summer about those next steps! https://www.youtube.com/live/Ke2x-PlEYDs?si=TlRDxvnPOwZdn8km
Our next event will be participating in the Halifax Pride parade with other HRM United churches! The parade is happening Saturday, July 18th at 12 pm. Once we get more information in the weeks to come, we will let you know. In the meantime, please mark it on your calendars! If you are interested in participating, please let Amber Thornton know by email at [email protected] or let her know at the church service. We will also have a sign-up sheet placed in the narthex for people to sign up. Once we get the date needed for final numbers, we will let you know.

Today we marked Pride Sunday with meaningful worship, story telling, and the sacrament of communion. Our music director, Denny Culbert shared his story and received a standing ovation! After the service we gathered for an educational session on the social justice aspect of becoming an affirming church. We are grateful for our invited guests, Kade, from the Youth Project and our very own Amanda Dodsworth. If you were unable to be there, it was livestreamed and can be found on our YouTube channel. Our call and work toward becoming a church rooted in affirmation, equity, and justice is well underway, and we are learning a lot. Thanks to all and know are you are invited to join us on the journey 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🌈. Photo credits: Gaye Wishart

06/05/2026

Join us on Tuesday, June 9 from 2:00–3:30 p.m. ET for an online session exploring how communities of faith can live into The United Church of Canada’s 2025 apology to 2S and LGBTQIA+ communities.

Participants will reflect on the apology, hear stories from communities already engaging this work, and explore practical ways to embody the apology in worship, community life, and public witness.

The session will also offer space for conversation, reflection, and identifying meaningful next steps in local contexts.

Where Everyone is Welcome

06/02/2026

God of the Rainbow,
More than those who watch for morning,
Our souls wait, for the day when each of us,
of every gender expression, gender identity, and sexual orientation
knows that we are meant to be:
loved, cherished, and protected; and
that we are to be:
proud of our identities; and
celebrated.

For we are your imperfectly perfect children,
called to reflect Christ’s radiant light,
embody Christ’s radical love; and
build your beloved community,
especially when storms of fear and hatred rage around us.

And so, more than those who watch for morning,
we, in our great diversity,
wait for your promised rainbow of peace,
as we work towards a world where every gender expression, gender identity, and sexual orientation is affirmed as beloved; and,
every soul’s spirit is able to sparkle, shine and sing your dream with pride.

May it be so,

Amen.

—Rev. Dr. Alydia Smith
