What is catechism?
"Catechism (catechesis) was the name given in the early days of the Church to the initial instruction of those persons, known as catechumens, who had expressed their desire to be baptized and become members of the Church. It explained the doctrines and the Mystery of Holy Baptism and set out the underlying principles of Christian life. Full instruction in the Holy Mysteries was intended only for the baptized, not only to avoid holy things being made public and perhaps denigrated, but mainly because it was understood that what is required for their deeper comprehension is the light of divine grace which is conferred through Holy Baptism. Today the term catechism denotes the entire systematic teaching of the Church, by means of which it instructs the faithful as well as those preparing for baptism, and explains its doctrines, the Holy Mysteries and the principles of Christian life."
