Assistant Leader Blog - David Bradbury
Let’s just paint a picture, your mother has gone out for the day, leaving you home alone with one simple mission, “pull the chicken out of the freezer before she comes home.” Now let’s be real, we’ve all been in this situation, wasting the day away, doing the things we want to do before doing the daunting task in front us in which it only becomes a bigger task as the time slowly depletes. My name is David, and in my leading week with my co-leader Daniel we had received word some special guests from Manitoba would be joining our community for the next few days. The news was very exciting, as I had once met this wonderful couple in the previous summer before, and of course I was thrilled for their arrival. However, it had not been made clear whether I or Daniel would be the one to reach out to our guests, in order to represent our Prosago community before their arrival. As you can imagine, just like the frozen chicken metaphor, Daniel and I had avoided the daunting task to the last possible second, our guests are minutes out, their guest room far from being prepared, the initial email to inform them of the upcoming calendar schedule not even titled let alone written up. Yes, although the situation was not great–we recovered, the room was made just in time, and an email was sent out, yet, lesson behind this experience is a reminder to do the “daunting task” as soon as they appear, or else the “daunting task” eats up free time–time that could have been better used, and for our guest, they deserved to receive an email way before minutes out of their arrival. In conclusion, the if we take initiative on tasks that need to be done, we create more freedom for ourselves and are often more considerate to the people around us.
