Assistant Leader Blog - David Bradbury
Let’s just paint a picture, your mother has gone out for the day, leaving you home alone with one simple mission, “pull the chicken out of the freezer before she comes home.” Now let’s be real, we’ve all been in this situation, wasting the day away, doing the things we want to do before doing the daunting task in front us in which it only becomes a bigger task as the time slowly depletes. My name is David, and in my leading week with my co-leader Daniel we had received word some special guests from Manitoba would be joining our community for the next few days. The news was very exciting, as I had once met this wonderful couple in the previous summer before, and of course I was thrilled for their arrival. However, it had not been made clear whether I or Daniel would be the one to reach out to our guests, in order to represent our Prosago community before their arrival. As you can imagine, just like the frozen chicken metaphor, Daniel and I had avoided the daunting task to the last possible second, our guests are minutes out, their guest room far from being prepared, the initial email to inform them of the upcoming calendar schedule not even titled let alone written up. Yes, although the situation was not great–we recovered, the room was made just in time, and an email was sent out, yet, lesson behind this experience is a reminder to do the “daunting task” as soon as they appear, or else the “daunting task” eats up free time–time that could have been better used, and for our guest, they deserved to receive an email way before minutes out of their arrival. In conclusion, the if we take initiative on tasks that need to be done, we create more freedom for ourselves and are often more considerate to the people around us.

Assistant Leader Blog - Daniel, Ice climbing.
Ice climbing was a learning experience for me on the importance of planning early and continuing to be consistent in planning. My co-leader, Simeon, and I both got an early start on planning, but we soon slowed down, missed details, and started to get behind. Even though we had a good start, we soon started to neglect important details until the last minute, leaving us in a last-minute scramble to get important gear packed and in order. Because we left packing gear until the last minute, it meant I had to wake up at 4:30 a.m. when we were planning on leaving at 9 a.m.; I had to wake up then to get gear and food organized and packed. Early morning packing could have been avoided if I had come up with a plan and schedule much earlier; having a plan and schedule would have allowed me to delegate tasks to others and have more planning time. The neglect of planning not only affected our departure time, but it also affected various aspects of the week for Simeon and me as we were leading. Problems we found were that we did not plan our morning devotions well enough, which led to us waking up early to finish writing them as they were missing information. This could have been easily avoided if we had simply set time aside beforehand to plan and write up devotions. Food planning was also affected by this, as I had a menu but no recipes, which caused some confusion while cooking throughout the week. What I learned from this is that starting to plan early, staying consistent, and managing everything properly will bring more effective leadership. Simeon and I were still able to lead and complete a successful ice climbing trip, but if we had planned better, it would have allowed for better leadership throughout the week, as well as more time for us both to spend with the community. Overall, the trip was very fun and full of learning, and Simeon and I both learned the importance of starting planning early and staying consistent.

Assistant Leadership Blog - Aidan Suarez
This leadership week, Daniel and I had to tackle the return of Prosago from their “White Water” trip in North Carolina. Our week looked like the following: Monday was an “Off Day”, Tuesday was an “Off Day” too, Wednesday was our first official work day with Range and Spring sessions, Thursday was our practicum day, and Friday was our session with Jess Mclean in “Spiritual Gifts”. One of the challenges we faced as a team was the communication and planification while in the ‘White Water’. I stayed in Canada while the rest of the people went to the US. It was at this time that I locked in and planned as much of the week as I could. The ‘Leadership Thought’ was taken from the book “Jesus in Leadership” on the topic of “Taking Risks”. The other elements of PLAID came to me as an inspiration of what was going to be experienced in the week and what the community has been experiencing in North Carolina. I decided to focus on ‘Community’ and help our ‘Semester 3’ feel like it was satisfactory with the time spent with each other. For ‘Devos’ I approached it with the following three questions: “How do Christians know what a healthy community looks like?”, “How do I interact in a Christian community?”, “How do I interact in a worldly community?”. Interaction was also heavy on the topic of community. We decided to borrow an idea that was created on the trips, the “I-40s”. Wednesday was a day for anyone to choose and spend an ‘I-[INSERT]’ of any kind with any other person, whoever they wanted. Thursday was a day for anyone to choose and spend an ‘I-[INSERT]’ of any kind with someone that they usually don't spend time with. Friday was a time that we all joined in together and watched the movie that inspired the vision of the week. We collaborated with the kitchen leaders to make Friday's dinner be a special one with a great dessert. Our vision of the week was tailored towards the movie “Spiderman Into The Spider-Verse”. We took a risk making this decision as we didn't know if everyone had seen the movie or if it would be appropriate. Nonetheless, the movie worked because of a specific scene where Miles jumps from a building as a leap-of-faith. Now, the reason it worked was because it encompassed all the four elements that the week had: Community, Risk, Revisiting new/old skills, and empowering people. The last one was fulfilled with our practicum day where half of us guided and empowered kids in their abilities and the other half empowered each other and full time staff by helping with important tasks. This week was liked by everyone; the organization, preparation, communication, and equipment was on point. There was a cleaning schedule that worked with the culture we established in Prosago and with each other’s time. I believe that this has been my best week so far and I can say that I saw first hand what the fruit of good work and early preparation looks like.

A very successful moosing adventure with Proságo yesterday! We spotted 4 moose and enjoyed a great hike together. We're praising God for the work of his hands in creation and that after 8 months we're still learning more about eachother!

What a trip! We're on our way North after 5 days of great whitewater in North Carolina. Amazing to see the improvements and growth as everyone challenged themselves on the river.

Big success on the trail! Excited to share some of their pictures and stories!

Leading with Joel was amazing! We planned our devo content to continue from the previous week's leaders so we could do the whole ten commandments and go more in depth with them! We spent a decent amount of time planning which really paid off. We both worked well together and got things done effectively and efficiently, we even set up a shared google doc to stay on track of planning PLAID's and set up Schedules for the Practicum group that was coming in. We had to be on our feet and jump straight into things as the week continued, especially when the school group that was coming in had their bus get stuck in the camp driveway. We then had to help unpack the kids and all their bags out of the bus so we could get the bus out. Both Liv and Joel did great at commanding during that, as it needed to be done fast and efficiently. Joel was great at listening and understanding what needed to be done in the moment and didn't hesitate to jump into action. Needless to say we got everything done well and the bus was able to leave and everything else went well for the rest of the week! The kids and teachers seemed to be not too fazed from the whole ordeal and enjoyed their time! It's always interesting to see people's leadership styles play out in different roles, with Joel he's very good at communicating what needs to be done in a well structured manner and people tend to want to listen to what he has to say, and in getting to lead with Joel we found out that we're somewhat similar in the way we lead! It was an amazing experience and a really fun week!
