Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, was one of the most quietly remarkable figures of the Victorian and Edwardian age.
Queen Victoria had nine children. Her favourite was Arthur. She said so, repeatedly, without apparent embarrassment, and nobody seems to have argued with her. He was born on 1sr of May 1850, the same day (different year) as the Duke of Wellington, who became his godfather. By the time he died, ninety-one years later, he had outlived every one of his siblings, two of his own children, and most of the world he had been born into.
He was a professional soldier for forty years, serving in Gibraltar, Egypt, India, Ireland, and Canada. He rose to the rank of Field Marshal and became the only British Prince ever to serve as Governor General of Canada. He was still turning up to encourage army recruits well into the Second World War when he was in his nineties, and new recruits found him a benign, baffling apparition from another century entirely. He was one of the godparents of the future Queen Elizabeth II. He had been born when her great-great-grandmother was on the throne.
He outlived his wife, his two eldest children, four monarchs, and the British Empire he had served his life. When he died in January 1942, he was the last surviving son of Queen Victoria and had witnessed more history than almost any royal of his generation.

Well done, good and faithful servant.
This morning we said goodbye to our Worshipful Brother Ernie Vannatter, who joined our Association at the age of 16 years old in 1952. He was soon elected as one of the youngest WM of Downie LOL 707 and in 1973, was appointed as the County Master of Perth South.
After moving to Kitchener in 1976, he was also appointed the WM of Kitchener and Preston before joining Prince Arthur, Guelph LOL 1331. He passed to our Grand Lodge above on the 11th of March 2026 at the age of 89
Ernie was of Dutch origin, who did not have one ounce of UK blood within his DNA but chose our Institution to support the principles of the Protestant faith, his loyalty to the Queen and the Crown, and his willingness to help and support those in need. In 2023, he was presented with his 70 year membership jewel.
Today there were over 100 family, friends and members in attendance at the Funeral Home in Kitchener to watch an impeccable Orange Service carried out by members of the Loyal Orange Association of Canada.
Our grateful thanks go out to the Provincial Grand Orange Lodge of Ontario West along with members from Harmony, Toronto and Hamilton who helped with providing a fitting send off for our WB Ernie Vannatter.

Came across this photo at the Lodge this evening of Brethren who attended the Imperial Grand Orange Council which was held in Toronto in 2006.
Apologies for the layout but it is a panoramic image and it was easier to make out some of the Brethren in this mode rather than losing definition by crop and rotating the picture.

Once again, our thanks go out to Brother Jeff Duncan for laying the wreath at the Remembrance Sunday Parade in Erin, Ontario on behalf of Guelph Orange Lodge LOL 1331.
How did you feel that morning when the call up papers came through?
Did your blood run cold or did excitement take hold at the thought that your Country needs you?
How did you feel that morning when the time came to set off from home?
Did you conquer your fears or did you break down in tears with the loved ones you'd soon leave alone?
How did you feel that morning when you first set foot in the trench?
Did you brush it aside or did you wish you could hide from the horror, the carnage, the stench?
How did you feel that morning when your friend was blown up by a shell?
Did you rush to his aid or just stand there afraid that you'd somehow been whisked off to Hell?
How did you feel that morning when they sent you over the top? Did you shout with relief or in sheer disbelief, vainly pray that this nightmare would stop?
How did you feel that morning when the bullets started to fly?
Did you think even then that you might cheat death again or did you know you were going to die?
How did you feel that morning as the life blood slipped slowly away?
Did you try to make sense of these crazy events or with one final breath try to pray?
How do I feel this morning in the face of such slaughter and sorrow?
Do I just stand aghast as I think of the past or give my all to a better tomorrow?

We will remember them.
