The Church of the Apostles - St. James & St. Matthias A sanctuary for prayer and healing; a centre for community and social action; the heart of Jesus in the world. The Church of St Matthias & St.

James the Apostle is an Anglican Church that is committed to living the gospel of inclusivity, restoration of peace and justice for all, and joyful engagement with all who do this work, both in the name of Jesus and with other sources of inspiration. Our vision is to be a gathering place for the wider community and a hub for social activism. We acknowledge that the land on which this church is b

uilt is the land traditionally used by the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe and Neutral People. We recognize the Mississaugas of the Credit as holding treaty rights on this territory. We also acknowledge the enduring presence and deep traditional knowledge and philosophies of the Indigenous People with whom we share this land and these waters.

Pi Day is Coming!

Drop by the corner of Paisley and Glasgow Saturday on 3.14 at 1:59 and let us share a gift of pie with you.

Because we love a math pun.
Because God's love is a constant.
Because you are beautifully created and worthy of good things.
Because pie is a good thing we want to share with you.
Because we celebrate a day to be P.I.E. - Public Intentional and Explicit about God's love for 2SLGBTQIA+ people, and their place in our church and community.

Remember we are dust, and to dust shall we return.

The people are angrily asking, “God- we fasted, and you still didn’t give us what we asked for.”

But our God is not a vending machine.
And fasting is not a magic cheat code that forces God’s hand.
And we already have God’s attention.

From the beginning, God has been telling God’s people the way to abundant life. Micah summarized it beautifully for us last week. “Do Justice. Love Kindness. Walk Humbly with your God”.

And this week, through Isaiah, God elaborates.
You want to get my attention?
If what you want is abundant life…
• Stop oppressing your workers
• Stop solving your disagreements with violence
• Loose the bonds of injustice,
• Let the oppressed go free.
• Feed the hungry.
• House the homeless
• Clothe the naked.

Do that. God says. And be the answer to your own prayers. Because that is how you build a world where you needs are met, like a watered garden and a spring whose waters never fail.

Do that. God says. And then you don’t even have to give me credit for granting you abundant life. You can be the one who is known as the repairer, and the restorer.

What is Shrove Tuesday? It is the last day before the season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. "Shrove" comes from the Old English Word "Shrive" which means to confess sins and receive absolution.

Why pancakes? They are a traditional way to use up rich foods (butter, eggs, sugar) that Christians might fast from during the season of Lent.

Pancakes are fairly sedate compared to some other traditions of celebration and feasting before the beginning of the Lenten fasting season. "Mardi Gras" is "fat Tuesday" and Carnival is derived from "remove the meat".

But we have pancakes! Join us Feb 17th from 5-7pm for a feast of pancakes with various meaty (or beany) sides and sweet toppings. Through the generosity of church members we are pleased to offer this community meal at no charge (donations are gratefully accepted)

(confessing sins is optional and discouraged while the Priest is washing pancake dishes)

"To be in alignment with God’s desire, and with God’s intention, is to be out of alignment with the wisdom of the world.

And it is a hard thing.
A dangerous thing.
To be out of alignment with the wisdom of the world.

And so we come here.

To remember these stories.
To eat this bread, and drink this cup.
To baptize our children into this weak, foolish, naïve hope.

That there is another way.
An abundant life.
Where peace grows out of justice.
Where kindness can be freely offered and freely received.

That this is, in fact, what God desires for us.
That when we live in this way, God is close, and we are blessed.

And the forces and powers of this world. They are loud, and they are strong. But. Not ever stronger than the love of God which is in all ways and at all times drawing us in, calling us closer, inviting us back into alignment with the Divine Will, which is for abundant life. For Justice. For peace. For love."

If you are an Andrew, or a Simon-- someone who has experienced being called out of the life you thought you were expecting, into something new. May you be brave, and bold, in your answer to that calling. May you find a community of people with whom to learn how to be what Jesus has asked you to be. May you find that the gifts that you need to become this new thing have been in you, all along. May you find joy in using them. May you go with God.

And if you are a Zebedee—someone who is being called in to your life, into exactly the thing you always knew you would be doing. May you be brave, and bold, in your answer to that calling. May you act with integrity in pursuit of truth, and peace, and justice. May you find a community of mutual care, people with whom to share the fruit of your labours and who will share with you the fruit of theirs. May you find that the gifts that you need have been in you all along. May you find joy in using them. May God go with you.

But this I do know. The Kingdom of Heaven is near you. And Jesus is calling you to follow; to pursue truth, and peace, and justice; into a community of mutual care; to love your neighbour; to proclaim, in your word and action, that you are a child of a God of mercy, and love.
