On the second anniversary of the pandemic the Canadian Interfaith Conversation put out a document talking about the role of faith organizations in dealing with issues facing our country.

The Canadian Interfaith Conversation (CIC) is a cross-Canada alliance of faith communities, who have joined hands to advance mutual understanding between people of different beliefs and to address together issues of concern to the common good of all. Together, the CIC’s forty-one member institutions embrace the majority of Canada’s population.

All the Messengers from God have come to bring teachings to foster love and harmony between people. They have all praised the teachers who came before them and foretold the coming of another in the future. The central teaching of the Baha'i Faith is unity. Abdu'l-Baha has played an essential role in its achievement within the Baha'i community by providing an example in his actions and helping us to deepen our understanding of the teachings of his father.

This is a special year for the Baha’i community as we celebrate the life of Abdu’l-Baha and commemorate his passing one hundred years ago in 1921.
He was born in Tehran Persia 23 May 1844 the very day of the birth of the Baha’i Era when the fore-runner of the Baha’i Faith declared his mission as a Messenger from God.
His Father who took the title Baha’u’llah after he accepted the new Faith was imprisoned in 1852 and on his release was exiled from Iran. He was held as a prisoner of the Ottoman Empire until his death in 1892.
Abdu’l-Baha was a prisoner from the age of 8 until he was released after the Young Turk Rebellion in 1908.
This is the back drop for the life of a figure who played a role unique in all religious history.
( the name Baha’u’llah translates to “Glory of God” and Abdu’l-Baha to “Servant of Glory”.

The Baha’i teachings tell us that our lives have a two-fold purpose: to attend to our own spiritual and intellectual growth and to contribute to the development of human society.
The first task has remained essentially unchanged throughout the ages and in the teachings of all religions.
As the human race has matured the needs of the age have changed and the social teachings of religions have changed to suit the time and location. For example, the unity of family, of tribe, of city state and nation have been successively established. At this time when the world has become a single neighbourhood we need to learn to live in harmony and unity with the entire human family.

Bahá’ís hail from all walks of life. Young and old, men and women alike, they live alongside others in every land and belong to every nation. They share a common goal of serving humanity and refining their inner-lives in accordance with the teachings of Bahá’u’lláh. The community to which they belong is one of learning and action, free from any sense of superiority or claim to exclusive understanding of truth. It is a community that strives to cultivate hope for the future of humanity, to foster purposeful effort, and to celebrate the endeavours of all those in the world who work to promote unity and alleviate human suffering.
