Our Story

The Salvation Army “opened fire” in the community of Glovertown, which was then Alexander Bay, on April 20, 1909 under the leadership of Ensign Maria Noseworthy. The first Salvation Army Citadel was opened later that same year on November 20th by Lieutenant Colonel Rees. The first citadel was located on the “South Shore” part of the community. Interesting fact; Harry Sweetapple, father of the Reverend Frank Sweetapple of the United Church of Canada, was the first infant to be christened by the Salvation Army Glovertown.

In 1948, this first citadel was taken apart and moved across the Terra Nova River to a parcel of land donated by the Gray Family who operated a local business. The reason for this move was to accommodate the many people from “Riverhead” so they would not have as far to walk in order to attend meetings.

During the 1940’s, many families resettled from the Gooseberry Island – a groups of islands located in Bonavista Bay – to such communities as Hare Bay, Dover, and Glovertown. These families, whose names included Perry, Wells, and Denty to name a few, were loyal followers of Salvationism. As a result of this influx, the second citadel could not contain all the people attending worship services. Within a short period of time, plans were made for the construction of a new citadel for the Glovertown Corps.

The third citadel opened in 1961. It is located on the land directly opposite the location of the second citadel. Although this building has undergone some interior renovations in recent years, it is essentially the same as when it was first built.
