An extremely gracious and thoughtful response from Cowessess First Nation Chief Cadmus Delorme on The National, when CBC host Ian Hanomansing asked what his message is to Canadians:

"From a First Nation perspective, I love living in Canada. I went to university, I grew up on Cowessess, I have the best job I think I ever wanted, being chief. It's not an easy task. But there is an accidental racism and ignorance in this country when it comes to history. You know, Indigenous people - and I'm speaking from Cowessess perspective - we don't want to live in our current state. We want to be part of the economy. We want to be part of the growth... the social lives.

Sometimes in this country, being Indigenous, it's as if you gotta prove yourself a little more. You're so used seeing maybe, someone asking for change and being Indigenous... you know, there's a story behind every one, of the history that we inherited. So my comment to everybody listening is, from Cowessess, we're not asking for pity. We're asking for understanding. We're asking that you stand beside us, that as we are gaining our control again - as Indigenous people - in our Treaty relationship, that we have better understanding. That our kids going to school understand the impact that residential school made, but also even pre... what great economy Indigenous people had prior to Treaty. This country would be so much more well-off, when Indigenous ideology and understanding is welcomed in, and not just brought in on certain days of the year.

(On the debate over whether to cancel Canada Day)
I would never tell somebody what to and what not to celebrate. You know, in 2021, we all inherited this. Nobody today created residential schools. Nobody today created the Indian Act. Nobody today created the Sixties Scoop. But we all inherited this. And if we want to say we're proud Canadians, then we will accept the beautiful country we have today, and we will accept what we all inherited. And what I would challenge is: Everybody on Canada Day in this country, if you say you're a proud Canadian, read the Truth and Reconciliation 'Calls to Action.' Over 100,000 residential school survivors told their story - including my parents - and they created the Truth and Reconciliation 'Calls to Action.' Bring that into your personal life, your social life, your business life. And read the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls 'Calls to Action.' There's 231 Calls to Action. If we can all own those a little bit in this country, in one generation we would overcome so many challenges today, that our next generation won't inherit this. We will make them more as Dreamers."

The United Church of Canada strongly condemns the horrific hate-filled attack that killed three generations of a Muslim family in London, Ontario on Sunday, June 6.
In his letter to the Romans, the apostle Paul writes: “Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another” (Romans 12:15‒16a). Many people in the United Church are weeping alongside the extended families and friends of the family members who were killed and injured in this premeditated hate crime and are grieving the innocent lives lost in this abhorrent attack. People in the church are also pained that some in the Muslim community feel alienated and more fearful for their lives and well-being as a result of this xenophobic and deadly assault. It is particularly distressing that such terrorist attacks re-traumatize Muslim people, who hold in their collective consciousness the terrorist attack in New Zealand, and in Toronto, Ontario, in 2020.
The United Church recognizes Islam as a religion of peace, mercy, justice, and compassion and has affirmed that the church wants to journey toward reconciliation, understanding, and cooperation with our Muslim neighbours. The church is deeply committed to working with Muslims and others for peace and justice for all humanity and to seeking ways to build right relationships among us. The church’s study, encourages “seeing Muslims as neighbours, as friends, and most of all as people whom God has called to faithfulness.”
The church joins with people across the country in condemning these attacks of overt hatred, including the National Council of Canadian Muslims, the National Muslim Christian Liaison Committee, the Ontario Human Rights Commission, the Prime Minister of Canada, and many political leaders.
The National Council of Canadian Muslims, which also tracks anti-Muslim incidents, has documented 322 hate crimes between 2013 and 2019. According to Statistics Canada, between 2015 and 2019, there was a 14 percent increase in police-reported hate crimes against Muslims.
The United Church decries a White supremacist system and culture that allows feelings of racial, cultural, and religious superiority to flourish and that enables such heinous hate crimes to occur. The church’s anti-racism policy, “That All May Be One” declares that “we believe that we are all equal before God.” The United Church therefore reaffirms its commitment to anti-racism, to engaging in interfaith dialogue, and to speaking out against violence and discrimination rooted in racial superiority, including Islamophobia.
The Moderator of the United Church has condemned the attacks and offered prayers. People in the United Church are also invited to pray, to engage in acts of solidarity with Muslim neighbours, to take concrete actions to combat Islamophobia, and to participate in community vigils to honour the lives of those affected.
We pray for peace among all peoples; God, hear our prayer

On the discovery of the bodies of children at Kamloops Residential School.
By Maggie Watts-Hammond

O my Lord God
Where were you?
Where were you when they cried to you
Or to their Mothers
When they had been taken far from the arms
That bore them.
Where were you?
O God
Do you kneel beside these graves
And weep
And remember them?
Do you remember every childish smile
Every playful laugh
Every future dream
Cut off by the indifference.
O Holy one,
We’re you not a child?
Did you not squat to watch an ant on its
Never ending journey.
Did you kneel on a muddy bank
Looking for tadpoles
Did you imagine glorious tomorrows?
Where were you?
Where were you when they
Shivered in a cold dorm bed
With hunger gnawing.
Where were you when the fever came
And there was no one to sing
The healing songs or lullabies?
Where were you when their breath
Came wheezing or with a whoop of
Inhalation that gave a dread disease it’s name?
Did your hand rest on them?
Tell me
For I am wracked with grief
For those tender ones
I never knew.
Do you weep for them?
Where were you when my forbears
Took them from their mothers.
Where were you when they decided?
Where were you when
Those with power to command
And those with power to oppose
And those who had been commanded
To love
And had read of your love,
And every week sang songs of your love,
All colluded to take Your little ones
To that place of death.
Had you abandoned their hearts?
These my forbears?
O Holy child,
Do not abandon me.
Do not leave me in ignorance or fear or callousness.
Instead bring me to my knees with these my
Brethren
Smudge me with a cleansing smoke
And lead me in love.
Allow us to grieve together
That we might cry together,
All my relations.

Loving God, help us make Mother’s Day more meaningful.
Help us make it a time of generosity through our Mission & Service that helps change the lives of families at home and around the world.
Help us make it even more of a celebration of those extraordinary people in our lives we call mom, who are like mothers to us, and to people of all genders, as well as trans and non-binary persons who offer mothering care.
Help us make it more supportive of mothers who have lost children, children who have lost mothers, women who long to be mothers, and those who choose not to be mothers.
Help us make it more open to those who don’t fit the traditional model of family and feel left out during this holiday.
Help us make it more caring of single moms, new moms, and those looking after their moms during the pandemic without the social supports that are usually in place.
Help us make it more aware of those whose mothering responsibilities stretch across decades to span a lifetime.
Help us make it more loving for those who want to draw closer to their mother and more healing for those who need to keep a distance.
Help us make Mother’s Day more, O God.
More generous…more open…more caring.
We pray this in your holy name.
Amen.

EARTH DAY 2021
God of the universe,
we praise your great long work of creation:
the moment of glory when our universe began
the birth and burning of the first brilliant stars,
the stars’ explosion in blazing supernovas;
the formation of our sun from scattered bits of dust;
the emergence of Earth, the wonder of water,
and there in the waters the miracle of life.
We praise your great long work of creation:
the unfolding of plant and animal life,
the development of human body and brain
and all the marvels of human creativity;
our rapidly expanding knowledge and technology;
our coming to understand where we have come from
and all that we are intimately part of.
We praise your great long work of creation.
God of the universe,
we thank you for your billions of years of making in bringing this to be.
May we live in the awareness of your magnificent and ongoing creation.
May we live in ways that honour your work.
May we be agents of your continuing creation.
Blessed be.
Amen.
