On Monday, June 1st., the ladies of our congregation were treated to a wonderful evening of fellowship, fun and treats hosted by the UCW of our church. It was intended to be a "thank you" to everyone for their assistance with UCW catered events - setting up, baking, donating, serving, etc.- and was very well attended. There were games, plenty of laughter, chatter at every table and many guests who were grateful for all the hard work that the UCW ladies had put into their tribute to our female congregation members. The evening was a huge success and we thank the UCW for the opportunity to socialize and get to know each other better outside of our church services.
For those who may not know, UCW stands for United Church Women . It has a long standing history in the development of the United Church and is known for getting things done. Our UCW is small in number but not small in planning, executing and achieving success in its projects. The ladies work diligently and face challenges fearlessly- there is nothing that they can't or won't attempt . And they are always victorious! Our UCW raises a lot of money for our congregation and will continue to do so over the years. It is the backbone of our church and, as a congregation whose members appreciate everything it does for us, we are more than happy to lend a hand when we can, whatever the task. So we say "thank you" right back to those amazing women of our Glace Bay United UCW!

This week's post begins with a thank you to all who attended the final service at Knox Church last Wednesday evening. The service was very well attended and evoked many memories for everyone there. If you were unable to attend, you missed an incredible hour of music and song with Joanne Stanton, former Knox organist and current Glace Bay United organist. She handled that pipe organ with proficiency, respect and love and captivated those present with several musical selections that awed every one of us with their beauty. Following her performance , there was a hymn sing which gave the attendees an opportunity to request their favorite hymns, accompanied by that amazing pipe organ for a final time. It was an emotional evening for many and a fitting tribute and farewell to Knox.
In other news, our renovations to the kitchen and staircase leading to the loft have been completed and have been rounded off with the painting of the church sanctuary and the church hall. All activities have resumed and it's business as usual in surroundings that were always welcoming but now are brighter and more modern and user friendly as well. Our Property Committee (Dennis Hiscock, Billy MacLeod, Susan Hiscock, Isabel Morrison and Allan Cooke) has outdone itself and has put a great deal of effort into the various improvement projects and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts for everything . We also are grateful to our Church Council for supporting the Property Committee in its endeavours. We give a special shout out to Billy MacLeod and Steve Deveaux who did an excellent job of painting and donating many long hours to the cause. We also are extremely grateful to our wonderful congregation for their patience during the renovations. Without your support , none of this would have been possible.

How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!

Hello everyone. We hope that you are enjoying this beautiful Victoria Day weekend and that you are feeding your minds, bodies and souls with things that bring you happiness and contentment.
May is turning out to be quite a month for Glace Bay United Church with many good things happening now and in the weeks to come.
When our three church congregations amalgamated to become one, a number of sacrifices had to be made, the largest one being to sell two of the three churches. The selection process was handled by a committee independent of the three congregations involved. As a result of their recommendation, the amalgamation committee and congregations involved chose to select Knox United and Newsom United to be sold. Newsom United was sold in 2025 and, in a few short weeks, Knox United will be turned over to a new owner. The sale of both churches comes with mixed emotions for sure. There is an inherent sadness for all of us when we think of those beautiful buildings and of the numerous memories that were created within their walls. At the same time, there is enormous relief that the buildings will live on repurposed but no doubt witnessing the birth of future memories for their new owners.
To say "goodbye" to Knox Church, we are holding an evening of music and song at Knox Church this Wednesday, May 20th at 7 p.m. Come and listen to Joanne Stanton play that fabulous pipe organ for the final time. Everyone welcome to attend! Let's fill the building as a final farewell!!! HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

We are almost half way through the month of May and the fun continues at Glace Bay United with a Dessert Tea hosted by our youth group. The tea takes place this Wednesday , the 13th, from 6-8 p.m. and tickets are $13. This tea is a major fundraiser for the group and helps to finance a weekend at camp for the members, many of whom don't get to enjoy experiences like that. Anyone who is interested in purchasing tickets may call any of the phone numbers listed in our announcements below or message this page and we will make sure that the tickets will be waiting at the door for you! I am sure the youth will greatly appreciate your support.
We have a long weekend coming up and a well deserved day off for many employees . On Monday, May 18th , we celebrate Victoria Day across Canada. Below this post, you will find a brief history of Victoria Day which is from an article in Wikipedia.

Victoria Day
This article is about the public holiday in Canada. For the holiday in parts of Scotland, see Victoria Day (Scotland). For other uses, see Victoria Day (disambiguation).

Victoria Day (French: Fête de la Reine, lit. 'Celebration of the Queen') is a federal Canadian public holiday observed on the last Monday preceding May 25 to honour Queen Victoria, who is known as the "Mother of Confederation". The holiday has existed in Canada since at least 1845, originally on Victoria's natural birthday, May 24. It falls on the Monday between the 18th and the 24th (inclusive) and, so, is always the penultimate Monday of May (May 18 in 2026 and May 24 in 2027). Victoria Day is a federal statutory holiday, as well as a holiday in six of Canada's ten provinces and all three of its territories. The holiday has always been a distinctly Canadian observance and continues to be celebrated across the country.[1][2] It is informally considered the start of the summer season in Canada.
