Happy Day of Orunmila, syncretized by the Afro-Cuban ancestors with Saint Francis of Assisi whose Feast day is today, October 4th. Though people sometimes discount the syncretic practice in Cuba and labelled Santeria as just the way the Slaves hid their religious practice to avoid persecution by the Spanish and the Church, my experience and that of the old Santeros (Iyalorisas and Bablorisas) in Cuba is that even at a spiritual level Catholic Saints and the spiritual archetypes/essence they represented did to some extent become part of a spiritual reality of veneration and faith of the Orisas. It was not a coincidence that in 2011, Religious leaders held oil lamps during the interfaith gathering for peace outside of no other place than the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi. From left: Anglican Archbishop Rowan Williams of Canterbury; Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople; Pope Benedict XVI; Rabbi David Rosen, representing the chief rabbinate of Israel; and Wande Abimbola, representative for the traditional religion of Nigeria’s Yoruba May Ifa, Orunmila and the spirit of Saint Francis bless us all allowing to live our lives in humility, happiness and peace!!!

BACKGROUND Yorùbá Ifá-Òrìṣà:

Yorùbá Ifá-Òrìṣà is an indigenous, earth-centred spiritual tradition originating from West Africa, especially the area now belonging to Nigeria. Although its exact time of origin is difficult to definitely ascertain, as the belief system was transmitted orally, the practice of Ifá is believed by some to have begun as early as the 11th century, while others argue that it may have begun as early as the 4th century B.C. Therefore, Ifá may indeed be one of the oldest monotheistic religions in the world. Today it is the 6th largest religion in number of adepts world-wide when you consider the various branches and ethnic lineages including Ifá-Òrìṣà, Santeria, Lucumi, Candomblé, Vodun-Fa and Èsìn Òrìṣà Ìbílè. The religion spread to the West (Diaspora) as a result of the Trans-Atlantic slave holocaust where the Yorùbá preserved and continued to practice their traditions, often having to conceal them or mask them with religious syncretism with Christianity. Ifá is balanced on four legs:

· Olódùmarè (Creator)

· Òrìṣà/Vodun (Nature Spirits),
