As a small church in a small community, we are sobered by the very sad and yet not unexpected finding of the unmarked graves of 215 children at the Kamloops Indian Residential School and now at many more sites across the country.

We extend our sympathy and sincere condolences to the families of these precious young children, to the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc people, to those who survived the Kamloops School, and to all those who experienced the fallout of the Indian Residential School system in Canada including those from the Snuneymuxw First Nation on whose unceded traditional lands we live and meet. We grieve for them and for all the Indigenous peoples who may be reliving painful family and community memories at this time.

We recognize the fact that many relatives held out hope that they might somehow find boys and girls, young men and women, who had simply disappeared without explanation. May the heartfelt hope you have carried give way to the comfort that comes by the love and support of family, community, and healing helpers.

To those who will plan and perform ceremonies for these children, may you yourselves be carried as one with them, knit together, and held in a higher place. May the name of each child be called out and set down and may the life of each one be recounted so all Canadians can know something of who they were and what they were like in the better days of early family life.

May the truth that has been spoken out with courage over the past decades by the survivors of Residential Schools and more recently in the context of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission be echoed again and again until all Canadians have ears to hear. May every detail we have heard be established as fact and be received finally and forever as truth, so that together we are able to take responsibility for a reconciled future.

May the survivors’ testimonies be set like stone in our memories and may each voice break open a new day in the lives of Indigenous peoples around the world.

With thousands of different groups and denominations saying thousands of different things about the same God and the same Bible... and all of them say that "they" have the TRUTH! It has become clear to all that this God is being used to promote and/or defend things that He has nothing to do with. When groups can take the same verses to support their actions of violence and hate, that others use to proclaim tolerance and love, you have to start asking some questions.
Where did the Bible come from? Is it still relevant for today? and if so, how does one read it and know what it actually says, as opposed to what the loudest voice in the room tells you it says? What place has 'truth' in a world that seems increasingly 'relative'? These are just a few of the questions I hope to chat about with those who are interested starting this Tuesday evening (February 2nd) at 7pm on ZOOM.
Each Tuesday in the month of February, we will dive a little deeper as we look together for answers. If you are interested you can find the link this Tuesday evening on the GFC website. All are welcome regardless of questions or convictions. I hope you can join me.

Since the beginning of this covid season, Gabriola Fellowship Church has been meeting together online. Early on we chose to prioritize the use of our building for community groups that needed a place where they could meet safely under the provincial guidelines. It has been a blessing to see various groups through PHC as well as vital community support groups be able to continue meeting the needs of our island community during these difficult days.

We just wanted you all to know that this will continue to be our heart and practice leading into the new year. We will greatly miss opening our doors to the community for our annual Christmas dinner, but would love for those who would still like to connect over this holiday season, to join us as we continue to gather each Sunday at 10am online over Zoom. We will also be having a Christmas Eve service on December 24th at 6:30pm.

Together, we have prayerfully decided to cancel our Sunday morning meetings until further notice, as we join the island community in taking deliberate steps to curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus. "Church" has never been about meeting God in a building on a Sunday morning. The true "Church" is demonstrated by those who know God's presence regardless of time, location, or circumstance. While we may engage in "social distancing" for a season, we will never be distant from the life-giving love of our Lord and Saviour which holds us all together.

an Opioid Overdose - Naloxone Training seminar will be happening at Gabriola Fellowship Church this Thursday, May 24th at 6pm. We have invited health care professionals to come and equip our community to help save lives in the midst of an ever growing opioid crisis. Kits are provided free of charge for those who attend.
