The Unitarian Fellowship of Fredericton is a member of the Canadian Unitarian Council and part of the Unitarian Universalist movement. U*Us are not held together by a creed, but rather by a “living tradition.” This means that as a spiritual and religious community our emphasis is not on doctrines but on a set of evolving principles, not on salvation but on living today and living fully, deeply, wi

th passion and compassion. We are a community that celebrates diversity, a group of people who are eager to explore the big questions with others and to learn together.

Did You Know? 🌿
The Land Is Our Teacher

Long before classrooms, textbooks, and online learning, the land was teaching.

For many Indigenous Peoples, learning comes through relationship with the land, waters, plants, animals, seasons, weather, medicines, and community.

The land teaches patience.

It teaches balance.

It teaches responsibility.

It teaches us that everything is connected.

When we learn from the land, we learn by listening, observing, remembering, and practising. We learn when to harvest, when to rest, when to give thanks, and how to care for what also cares for us.

This is why land-based learning is so important. It is not just outdoor education. It is a way of knowing. It connects people to culture, language, identity, wellness, and responsibility.

In western systems, knowledge is often measured by what can be written down or tested. Indigenous ways of knowing remind us that knowledge can also be lived, carried, shared, and experienced.

The land has always known the way.

We are here to listen.

Throughout National Indigenous History Month, Grandmother’s Voice is sharing reflections that centre Indigenous knowledge, lived experience, history, culture, wellness, and community connection. We invite you to join the conversation with kindness, curiosity, and respect. What do you wish more people knew? We will also introduce Zoomers in Balance, a free community-based exercise program for adults aged 50+ that offers both in-person and online classes designed to improve balance and reduce falls. Participants will learn about available program options and ways to get involved in local classes. The session will include time for questions and discussion.

June 21th AI Update
Speaker and Service Leader: Myron Hedderson
Tech Support: Tony Fitzgerald Myron will discuss developments in AI since his last presentation a year ago. There is so much to talk about that he hasn’t decided on his final content in time for publication in the Touchstone, but some things that will definitely make the cut are:
• Many AI companies and futurists in 2022 and 2023 predicted major changes by 2028 to 2030. How have things gone so far, relative to those predictions?
• We’ve now reached the point where the most advanced AI model available is not being made publicly available until better safety measures are in place. Why, and what does this mean?
• Is there an AI bubble that’s going to pop and crash the economy like the dot com and housing bubbles?
• What’s this about AIs being used by the military, the US designating the leading company a supply chain risk, and then using them anyway?
• What options do we as citizens, but not citizens of the US, have to influence how AI develops, nd how can I personally prepare for the changes that may be coming?
June 28th The Buddha Meets AI
Service Leader: Heather Lunergan
Tech Support: Myron Hedderson
What can the Buddha’s teaching about reality and the working of the mind tell us about this emerging technology? This service will feature a thoughtful talk by Rev. Straube, who has served UU congregations for 35 years, in Washington State, North Carolina and, most 1recently, as Lead Minister of the First UU Church of San Diego. He currently has a ministry of spiritual direction, preaching and teaching.
Adult ProgramsOur Book Club is now reading James by Percival Everett. It gives a voice to Jim, the slave in Huckleberry Finn and retells the story. All welcome to join on June 17th at 6:30 when we discuss “James.” with Robin Millar. Janet will make scones on Wednesday June 10th at 1 PM.
All welcome to join for conversation and a scone and will also stay after the service on June 7th for anyone who would like to bring their knitting or craft project. We have a rug hooking kit to give away.
Graci will resume “Tea and Conversation” by zoom in September. It is a busy time for her right now and we will look forward to September.
