Sermon (Will Loewen) - Reading the Bible as As Good News: The Four Gospels

Text: Matthew 5:43-48

10/22/2026

How might we see the Sermon on the Mount as Jesus's contribution to the wisdom literature tradition? Since our world doesn't seem to work the way we feel God meant it to, what kind of difference can the church make by responding with the Creator's love? This coming Sunday we'll look at the Anabaptist version of two kingdom theology.

Sermon (Nikayla Reize): Reading the Bible as Texts Which Ask Difficult Questions: Poetry, Worship, and Wisdom Literature

Texts: Proverbs 1:20-27 and Job 1:6-12

10/12/2026

When we come to the Bible with the question, "Why do bad things happen to good people, or why is there so much suffering?" — we are met with three different answers, all side by side. This is the wisdom tradition. Proverbs warns us toward good choices, as if our suffering could be avoided by virtue of our own wisdom. Job is about a righteous man who suffered because of a wager between God and Satan that Job knew nothing about, as if to say our suffering isn't about us and isn't our fault. Ecclesiastes encourages us to stop trying to make sense of it, and to live life to the fullest instead.

Is one of these voices correct — or is it the dialogue between the three that brings us together and cultivates wisdom?

Pastor Nikayla will speak to this on October 18th as part of our ongoing sermon series: Reading the Bible as Anabaptists.

All are welcome!

This Sunday - October 11th: Reading the Bible as Texts That Speak Truth to Power: The Prophets - with guest speaker, Will Loewen
Texts: Isaiah 1; Habakkuk 2

The Prophetic Voice refuses to be silent, calloused, or numb. The prophets grieve and imagine in the public sphere to help us discern whether we are still capable of responding to the cries of injustice around us.

Sermon (Nikayla Reize): Reading the Bible as Texts of Violence and Power: The Historical Books
Texts: Joshua 6:1-7; 1 Samuel 8:4-17
Anabaptists know all about persecution for resisting violence. These texts don’t glorify or authorize violence: they actually encourage us to face the reality of the violence in our midst and to not be afraid to face the difficult realities with Jesus by our side.
