A Prayer for Elam (Iran) on Pentecost Weekend

Acts 2:9-11 famously records the nations represented in the crowd that gathered on Pentecost when the wind and fire of the Holy Spirit moved among the disciples. “Parthians, Medes and Elamites…” Elamites – people from Elam. Elam is one of the ancient names for Iran. People from ancient Iran were in the crowd at Pentecost and heard the disciples speaking of the wonders of God in their own language.

A Prayer

O Lord, we cry out for Elam, for Iran, that peace would come. Not just a ceasefire, but the peace of shalom. A peace where people can sit under their own tree without fear.

O Lord, we rejoice that since the day of Pentecost the people of Elam have heard in their own language the good news of God’s wonderful deeds in Jesus Christ. We rejoice that through the ages, the Holy Spirit has sustained a witness to You and Your Son, Jesus, in Elam, in Iran.

We are humbled, O Lord, by the courage and resilience of Your followers in Elam. We are challenged by their faithfulness in the face of persecution and their willingness to serve those in need.

We celebrate that both in Elam (Iran) and in diaspora Elamites (Iranians) continue to hear the good news of Jesus and the hope that he brings. O Lord, thank you for continuing to speak to them.

O Lord, end the war, bring peace. Do in our time what we have heard you did in the past. Bring the warlike and the powerful to a place where they desire peace over violence; restoration over further destruction; and the nurture of human flourishing over winning.

Cause us to remember to pray for our Christian sisters and brothers in Elam.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.

A Prayer on April 14, 2026

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy on President Donald Trump who does not understand the path to true greatness.
Lord, have mercy on President Donald Trump who does not recognize how toxic pride is.
Lord, have mercy on President Donald Trump who foolishly does not fear You or your Son, Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace.

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy on Vice-President J D Vance who does not understand the path to true greatness.
Lord, have mercy on Vice-President J D Vance who does not recognize how toxic pride is.
Lord, have mercy on Vice-President J D Vance who foolishly does not fear You or your Son, Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace.

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy on all who in arrogance believe the way to greatness is through military might and economic domination.
Lord, have mercy on all who in foolishness act as though You do not exist.

Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy. Amen.

Hold back the violence that is threatened against the 93 million people who live in that country.
