Edmonton Catholic Cemeteries Catholic Cemeteries of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton. BRIEF HISTORY

HOLY CROSS CEMETERY AND MAUSOLEUM
14611 Mark Messier Trail NW (formerly St. ST.

Albert Trail) Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Established in 1954 by Archbishop John Hugh MacDonald, this forty-five acre property serves the population throughout the greater Edmonton area. In 1990, an 1100 space Chapel Mausoleum, the first in the Archdiocesan cemetery system, was built at Holy Cross. This Mausoleum has been expanded now 2 times and is on its third expansion. OUR LADY OF PEACE CEMETER

Y AND COLUMBARIUM
4814 Meridian Street, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

This most recent addition to the Edmonton Catholic Cemeteries was established in 1992 by Archbishop Joseph MacNeil. Located in Edmonton's south-eastern corner, at Highway 14 and Whitemud Freeway, this cemetery will, in time, become the largest of the diocesan properties. At present, 18 of a total of 60 acres have been developed. ALBERT CEMETERY
7 St. Vital Avenue, St. Albert, Alberta, Canada

Established in 1860 by Bishop Vital Grandin, the Oblate Fathers supervised the operation of this cemetery until 1975, when it was handed over to the Archdiocese of Edmonton. The first recorded burial in the cemetery was 10 year old Marguerite, daughter of Raminakus, on June 1, 1861, presided over by Father Albert Lacombe. Although many were interred in the cemetery during its first thirty years, including over three hundred victims of the 1870-71 smallpox epidemic, there are few memorials which predate 1890. The oldest sections of St. Albert Cemetery have long been sold and hundreds of burials have been made in this four acre facility. Additional space was acquired in 1987 and approximately three hundred additional burial spaces provide both flush memorial and upright monument opportunities. ANTHONY CEMETERY
106 Street and 53 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Established in 1902 as a parish cemetery to serve the community of Southside Edmonton. The Duggan family, well-known in Edmonton and prominent in the history of St. Anthony's Parish and in south Edmonton generally, have a family plot here. JOACHIM CEMETERY
105 Avenue at 117 Street, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Established in 1888 on land donated by the Groat family, this cemetery initially served the downtown community of St. Joachim Parish, the Catholic parish originally centered in the old Fort Edmonton. The cemetery contains a variety of historic monuments; walking through its many rows of memorials, one can begin to appreciate the history of the Catholic presence in central Alberta. A large central cross marks the burial crypt of Archbishop Henry Joseph O'Leary (d. 1938).

This last Friday, ECC staff and our families prayed the Stations of the Cross. This was a staff initiative to remember Jesus’ sacrifice, bring healing to our families, and pray for our loved one’s souls. The stations were placed throughout the mausoleum to encourage the nature of a pilgrimage. Please consider joining us next year.

May he rest in peace.

We join the faithful in mourning the passing of Rev. Stanisław Błaszkowski, who died on January 25 in Krotoszyny, Poland, at the age of 92. Father Stan served God’s people with unwavering dedication for 66 years of priestly ministry.

Born on August 12, 1934, in Nawra, Poland, to Teofil and Leokadia, Father Stan professed his vows with the missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate and was ordained to the priesthood on June 26, 1960, in Obra, Poland, within the Archdiocese of Katowice.

He arrived in Canada on August 15, 1979, to minister in the Archdiocese of Edmonton, where he was incardinated on April 30, 1985. Over the decades, Father Stan faithfully served numerous parish communities, including Holy Rosary, St. Anthony, and Mary Help of Christians in Edmonton, as well as the rural parishes of Our Lady of Victory (Thorsby), St. Columba (Clandonald), Our Lady of Grace (Castor), St. Elizabeth (Evansburg), St. Anthony (Drayton Valley), St. Rose of Lima (Onoway), and Holy Name of Jesus (Vermilion).

From 1979 to 2006, Father Stan also ministered as a hospital chaplain, offering compassion and pastoral care to patients and families. He later served on loan to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mackenzie-Fort Smith from 2009 to 2013, before retiring to Poland. Many also remember him for his contributions to the Polish radio program on CKER AM 1480, through which he continued to nurture the faith of the Polish Catholic community.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 31, 2026, in Krotoszyny, Poland, within the Diocese of Toruń, where he will be laid to rest.

Let us pray for the repose of the soul of Father Stanisław Błaszkowski.
Requiescat in pace.
