“In the dark, we have to trust what we cannot see, and that is where new life begins...”

New beginnings can be challenging, especially when they require us to be vulnerable. In this week’s gospel, we’ll hear how a man named Nicodemus seeks out Jesus in the darkness of night, perhaps so that he can ask questions about faith that feel too tender and personal to ask in front of an audience. We’ll learn how these questions that come from the least defensive place, or the most vulnerable place in us are often the best questions — indeed, they are THE questions that draw us most tenderly into relationship with God. Our doubts, wonderments, and questions are all part of a life of faith, and are welcome companions in our pilgrimage with God. May you walk in the grace and beauty of this honest, human, and God-loved faith this week.

As Ramadan begins tonight, we offer our greetings to Muslim neighbours observing this holy month. We honour this season of prayer, fasting and devotion, wishing them peace along the way.

This Sunday we begin our Lenten journey in two landscapes: a verdant garden and a parched desert. We hear how Adam and Eve encounter their humanity in a painful way. We’ll consider how the God who made the garden enters the emptiness of the desert to encounter that same fragile humanity, and instead of trading his personhood for power and influence, he holds it with love and tenderness, opening himself to the mercy and grace of the Spirit. What a beautiful way to start our journey! Meditating on the love of God is a balm in these times of rawness and uncertainty, where egregious abuses of power seem to be everywhere, and power is pursued at all costs. May we hold the world, and especially those who suffer most within it, with this love that the Spirit offer us, too. May the church always stand with the hurting, the forsaken, the suffering, and those who wait for justice.

In Ephesians 4:6, St Paul emphasizes the profound oneness of God, declaring that he is “above all and through all and in all”. God is both transcendent, existing beyond all, and immanent, actively present within his creation. This foundational truth calls the Church to embody and live out unity, rooted in the shared belief in one true God who is the Father of all believers. “All” signifies that every person created in God’s image falls under God’s authority. Worshipping one God creates a strong bond of unity among Christians. Just as family members find common ground through their love for a parent, Christians are called to be united in their devotion to the same Father.
We confess with faith and worship you, Loving Father, for you are in heaven beyond words,
and on earth beyond understanding,
through your Son, Jesus Christ. In your tender care, you are the beginning and fulfilment of everything. Glory forever to you, Father, with the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
