We get word today of a Baptist pastor that shepherded his congregation for over 25 years in Myanmar was murdered on June 4 by the Burmese military dictatorship.
"The Rev. William, a Baptist pastor in Myanmar’s Chin state, has been killed by the country’s military junta, along with a fellow Chin Christian, Nam Ceu, according to international advocacy groups.
The pair had been arrested in May and held by the military since then, according to the U.S.-based International Christian Concern (ICC). The two men were accused of aiding the Hakha Chinland Defense Force, an armed group fighting the junta.
The Rev. William’s church, Chungcung Baptist Church, was looted and burned in October 2021, and the village around it has faced repeated violent raids since the military junta seized power that year. The village consisted of about 300 houses .
William leaves behind a wife and five children."
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
-Psalm 23
Oh Good Shepherd, we weep with the family of Rev. William and the Chungcung Baptist Church as they grieve the loss of their spiritual shepherd, father, and husband. We know Rev. William is now walking alongside the still waters and green pastures now with You. So we pray for his family, congregation, and community that remains in Myanmar. Comfort and provide for them. We pray that You would restore their souls, guide them in Your paths of righteousness in this grieving time. comfort them and prepare a table before them in the midst of their enemies. Anoint their heads with oil and help them to continue to live and walk through this dark valley of death with the leading and comfort of Your rod and staff. Lord, we even boldly ask that those that murdered Rev. William will be not be left at ease or peace until they turn and follow You. Protect this village and church from further persecution. Provide and care for his wife and 5 children that remain. May this death be the catalyst for revival and a tremendous growth of Jesus-followers in this region.
