PRAYER OF APPROACH
A prayer for Indigenous Day of Prayer by the Rev. Maggie Dieter, former Executive Minister, Aboriginal Ministries and Indigenous Justice; and Bill Snow, Stoney Nakoda First Nation, Alberta, member of the Indigenous Justice and Residential School Committee
God, Creator and Great Mystery, we praise you for the Sacred Fires that burn today and for the prayer-filled smoke that you receive and bless.
We offer our deep gratitude that the Fire’s light informs and guides our journey.
We pray, just as the Elders prayed, for renewal and for the restoration of beauty to the land and its people.
We acknowledge the diverse and abundant gifts of Canada’s Indigenous Peoples.
We recognize that their knowledge and wisdom have benefited generations past and present, and that this blessing will continue for generations to come.
We remember the many who are committed to the healing of family, community, and nations.
We pray for Mother Earth, the waters, the winds, for our siblings the animals, birds, and fish, and all of life that surrounds us.
We pray that we will walk the good Red Road of life, and that we will walk with courage, honesty, humility, love, respect, truth and wisdom.
We offer this prayer in humility and hope, and in the name, of our brother Jesus, the one who lights our path to wholeness, justice and peace.
Amen.

A UNITED CHURCH CREED
We are not alone, we live in God’s world.
We believe in God
Who has created and is creating
Who has come in Jesus,
The Word made flesh
To reconcile and make new
Who works in us and others by the Spirit.
We trust in God.
We are called to be the Church
To celebrate God’s presence
To live with respect in Creation
To love and serve others
To seek justice and resist evil
To proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen our judge and our hope.
In life, in death, in life beyond death,
God is with us
We are not alone.
Thanks be to God.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION & ASSURANCE OF GRACE
I waited, I waited on the Lord Voices United 954
From that time Jesus began to proclaim,
“Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is near!”
Matthew 4:17
God, before You we pray
In this moment we may wonder, what do we say?
What are we asking for?
Let us pause and listen
And in the silence we may
My child, you are forgiven and healed
(Silence)
God have mercy
Christ have mercy
God have mercy
Let us pray
Our Father, who art in heaven
Hallowed be thy name
Thy Kingdom come
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory
Forever and ever
Amen

RESPONSIVE READING
The Book of Jeremiah 20:7-13
O God, You have enticed me, and I was enticed
You have overpowered me, and you have prevailed.
I have become a laughingstock all day long, everyone mocks me.
For whenever I speak, I must cry out, I must shout, “Violence and destruction!”
For the word of God has become for me a reproach and derision all day long.
If I say, “I will not mention God or speak any more in their name,” then within me there is something like a burning fire
shut up in my bones.
I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot.
For I hear many whispering:
“Terror is all around! Denounce him! Let us denounce him!”
All my close friends are watching for me to stumble.
“Perhaps he can be enticed, and we can prevail against him and take our revenge on him.”
But God is with me like a terrifying warrior
Therefore, my persecutors will stumble, and they will not prevail.
They will be greatly shamed, for they will not succeed.
Their eternal dishonor will never be forgotten.
O God, You test the righteous, You see the heart and the mind.
Let me see Your retribution upon them, for to You I have committed my cause.
Sing to God, praise God, for they have delivered the life of the needy from the hands of evildoers.

WELCOME & GATHERING
The Gospel of Matthew 9:35-38
Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness.
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.
Therefore, ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest."

WELCOME & GATHERING
The Gospel of Matthew 9:9-13
As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax-collection station, and he said to him, "Follow me." And he got up and followed him.
And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with Jesus and his disciples.
When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"
But when he heard this, he said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.
Go and learn what this means, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous but sinners."

When God began to create the heavens and the earth, the earth was complete chaos, and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters.

And God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness.

PSALM 8
O God, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouths of babes and infants You have founded a bulwark because of Your foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger.
When I look at Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established
What are humans that You are mindful of them, mortals that You care for them?
Yet You have made them a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor.
You have given them dominion over the works of Your hands.
You have put all things under their feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O God, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!

WELCOME & GATHERING
Rachel Held Evans
The Spirit is like breath, as close as the lungs, the chest, the lips, the fogged canvas where little fingers draw hearts, the tide that rises and falls twenty-three thousand times a day in a rhythm so intimate we forget to notice until it enervates or until a supine yogi says pay attention and its fragile power awes again.
Inhale.
Exhale.
Expand.
Release.
In the beginning, God breathed.
And the dust breathed back enough oxygen, water, and carbon dioxide to make an atmosphere, to make a man.
Job knew life as “the breath of God in my nostrils,” given and taken away.
With breath, the Creator kindled the stars, parted a sea, woke a valley of dry bones, inspired a sacred text.
So, too, the Spirit, inhaled and exhaled in a million quotidian ways, animates, revives, nourishes, sustains, speaks.
It is as near as the nose and as everywhere as the air
So pay attention!

THE CELEBRATION OF COMMUNION
The Spirit of God be with you all.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts;
We lift them to God.
Give thanks to our God!
All our thanks, all our praise!

Holy God of wind and fire, your Spirit renews the face of the earth and warms the hearts of your people.
We give you thanks for your gifts of pentecostal power.
Tongues that utter prophetic words of truth and justice.
Flames that kindle new visions of compassion and peace
Fresh breezes that blow down the walls which separate us from you and one another.
And so it is that we join with every voice and tongue
on earth and in the heavens to give you praise:

Holy, Holy, Holy, God, our life, our mercy, our might.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Save us, we pray, you beyond all.
Blest is the One who comes in your name.
Save us, we pray, you beyond all.

In the night in which he was betrayed, Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
“Take eat; this is my body, given for you. do this for the remembrance of me.”
Again, after supper he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:
“This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.”
Do this for the remembrance of me.

We pray you, God of Love, send your Holy Spirit upon us and what we do here, that we, and these gifts, touched by your Spirit, may be signs of life and love to each other, and to all the world.

Come, the meal is ready, and ae share in this meal let us remember what Jesus said:
“I am the bread of life, whoever comes to me will never be hungry; whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

As we have been renewed at this your table, let us go out into your world sharing this vision with others as the servant church of the servant Christ, in whose name we pray.
Amen.

WE SHARE IN GOD’S WORD
Martin Luther
Dear God, let your Word shine in our hearts by your Holy Spirit.
Make it so bright and warm that we always find our comfort and joy in it.
Amen.

RESPONSIVE READING
A reading from Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians 12:4-13
Now there are varieties of gifts but the same Spirit, and there are varieties of services but the same Lord, and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone.
To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit
To another faith by the same Spirit
To another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
To another the working of power deeds
To another prophecy
To another the discernment of spirits
To another various kinds of tongues
To another the interpretation of tongues.
All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.
For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.
For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--Jews or Greeks, slaves or free--and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

The Gospel of Mark 1:35
God, You touch our lives with healing and with justice
New life is your gift.
We give You thanks for Your Good News
Revealed through Your Son Jesus Christ.
Good News that invites and challenges us to be living witnesses to Your hope for a better world
And so in silence we give thanks for those who have been such witnesses in our lives
(Silence)
