This week's Order of Service for Pentecost Sunday, the 24th of May 2026
Strathearn United Church welcomes you to our Morning Worship.
24th of May 2026, Pentecost Sunday
Musical Prelude
WELCOME & GATHERING
Rachel Held Evans
The Spirit is like breath, as close as the lungs, the chest, the lips, the fogged canvas where little fingers draw hearts, the tide that rises and falls twenty-three thousand times a day in a rhythm so intimate we forget to notice until it enervates or until a supine yogi says pay attention and its fragile power awes again.
Inhale.
Exhale.
Expand.
Release.
In the beginning, God breathed.
And the dust breathed back enough oxygen, water, and carbon dioxide to make an atmosphere, to make a man.
Job knew life as “the breath of God in my nostrils,” given and taken away.
With breath, the Creator kindled the stars, parted a sea, woke a valley of dry bones, inspired a sacred text.
So, too, the Spirit, inhaled and exhaled in a million quotidian ways, animates, revives, nourishes, sustains, speaks.
It is as near as the nose and as everywhere as the air
So pay attention!

PRAYER OF APPROACH
God, we gather before You.
We open our hearts to You
Hoping to be touched by the flames of Your Spirit
The fire of Pentecost is the fire of faith
Sometimes it burns brightly
Sometimes it flickers, threatened by the turmoil around us.
Yet, it still burns
A light in the darkness that brings warmth and comfort to those who yearn for better days.
God, fill us with Your Spirit so may share the fire and hope of Pentecost.
Amen
A UNITED CHURCH CREED
We are not alone, we live in God’s world.
We believe in God
Who has created and is creating
Who has come in Jesus,
The Word made flesh
To reconcile and make new
Who works in us and others by the Spirit.
We trust in God.
We are called to be the Church
To celebrate God’s presence
To live with respect in Creation
To love and serve others
To seek justice and resist evil
To proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen our judge and our hope.
In life, in death, in life beyond death,
God is with us
We are not alone.
Thanks be to God.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION & ASSURANCE OF GRACE

“I believe that God’s word of grace can also come through simple, imperfect everyday human love.”
Nadia Bolz-Weber
God, we confess to You
Our struggles to embrace the possibility of new beginnings
On this Pentecost may we be renewed
Through the touch of Your frace
And free from our hesitation
May we witness to Your Living Spirit in this broken world
(Silence)
God have mercy
Christ have mercy
God have mercy
God, thank You
Let us pray
Our Father, who art in heaven
Hallowed be thy name
Thy Kingdom come
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory
Forever and ever
Amen

THE CELEBRATION OF COMMUNION
The Spirit of God be with you all.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts;
We lift them to God.
Give thanks to our God!
All our thanks, all our praise!
Holy God of wind and fire, your Spirit renews the face of the earth and warms the hearts of your people.
We give you thanks for your gifts of pentecostal power.
Tongues that utter prophetic words of truth and justice.
Flames that kindle new visions of compassion and peace
Fresh breezes that blow down the walls which separate us from you and one another.
And so it is that we join with every voice and tongue
on earth and in the heavens to give you praise:
Holy, Holy, Holy, God, our life, our mercy, our might.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Save us, we pray, you beyond all.
Blest is the One who comes in your name.
Save us, we pray, you beyond all.
In the night in which he was betrayed, Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
“Take eat; this is my body, given for you. do this for the remembrance of me.”
Again, after supper he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:
“This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.”
Do this for the remembrance of me.
We pray you, God of Love, send your Holy Spirit upon us and what we do here, that we, and these gifts, touched by your Spirit, may be signs of life and love to each other, and to all the world.
Come, the meal is ready, and ae share in this meal let us remember what Jesus said:
“I am the bread of life, whoever comes to me will never be hungry; whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
As we have been renewed at this your table, let us go out into your world sharing this vision with others as the servant church of the servant Christ, in whose name we pray.
Amen.
WE SHARE IN GOD’S WORD
Martin Luther
Dear God, let your Word shine in our hearts by your Holy Spirit.
Make it so bright and warm that we always find our comfort and joy in it.
Amen.
RESPONSIVE READING
A reading from Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians 12:4-13
Now there are varieties of gifts but the same Spirit, and there are varieties of services but the same Lord, and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone.
To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit
To another faith by the same Spirit
To another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
To another the working of power deeds
To another prophecy
To another the discernment of spirits
To another various kinds of tongues
To another the interpretation of tongues.
All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.
For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.
For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--Jews or Greeks, slaves or free--and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
