This Sunday -
Borstad Family Bells will be playing 2 pieces on Sunday, June 7th, with some members of the Borstad family plus friend Amy (who also plays in The Bells of Mill Woods).
One of the pieces is a familiar hymn, BEACH SPRING which is found in our hymn book, Voices United, having four different hymns from 4 different lyricists.
The hymn most often sung to Beach Spring, at Mill Woods United Church is "Come and Find the Quiet Centre”, with lyrics by Shirley Erena Murray. However, this music has its roots back to 1844, from The Sacred Harp, originally from Beach Spring Baptist Church USA. This melody came from the deep South, arranged by an American from Maryland, to New Zealand (Murray’s homeland), to Canada, yet this bell piece has a bit of a Celtic twist, often associated with harps. Hope you enjoy this version that draws on many musical styles and places.
The Theme from ‘The Moldau” is a Bohemian folk melody called Vltava (My Homeland), by Bedrich Smetana. The Moldau is a wide river flowing from the forests of Bohemia through to Prague. It was written at a time of occupation of the Czech people and also a time when Smetana was personally beset with deafness. The rich harmonies are well suited to bells and Martha Thompson has made a beautiful, gently flowing piece. Picture your favourite river or water and enjoy this timeless piece.
Come and enjoy with us! Service starts at 10:30 ❤️
