Wisdom To Open The New Year
Revelations 19:7-8
Romans 13:11-14

In the news today, there are sad and dark stories of disappointment. We need to have the right discernment to know what is right and wrong. When the Bible talks about time, it uses 2 different definitions. Kronos is for physical time and Kairos is for God’s time. We need to know what Kairos is when we read the Bible. When we talk about the year of Bridal Preparation we are talking about Kairos, not Kronos. And when you follow his Words and His timing, you experience a transformation in your lives.

Even if we go through darkness, we shouldn’t internalize the darkness. We should put on the “Armour of Light” like it says in Romans 13:12. Do we really know God’s time? He gives us His eyes to discern what is going on, and through this we experience God’s grace and God’s blessing.

Whatever darkness we are in, we don’t have to have anxiety because there is hope; we are waiting for the morning light. Some people let darkness control their lives. But we need to remember that before the morning comes we need to hold onto His Words and wisdom. People study before an exam or getting married and so as Christians, we need to study and prepare also. We need to stand in faith since the Bible says that the night is nearly over. The time (Kairos) will come soon so don’t let the darkness control your life. Many Christians are filled with their own righteousness and they are not listening, and so when dark times come they just complain and blame others.

Jesus is the groom and Christians are the Bride. But how can we become His bride and get close to Him since we are so filled with sin and are weak? Christ is the Holy of Holies. When we accept Him, all our sins are covered and washed away. Jesus was the sacrificial lamb to atone for all of us forever. We don’t have to cover up and hide our sins. All we need to do is accept Jesus and our sins will be covered and cleaned. And since we have received so much grace from Him, we must serve Him faithfully and joyfully. He allowed us to wear the fine linens so how can we glorify Him? He loves us and He wants to transform us to become pure so that we can be presented to Him.

The highest commandment is to love God with all your heart and strength and He will have wrath for you if you worship other Gods and idols.
Our priorities as a Christian are:
• Loving God
• Having hope in God
• Spending time with God

When a ship has an accident, all of the classes are mixed together and then there are only two kinds of people; the ones who get rescued and the ones who don’t. Are we ready to get rescued? We must be ready in this time of darkness, and we can have hope because God is the Light that will carry us through it all. The Bible says that God is with us throughout history; He is always there.

As Christians, we are here to serve the Lord, but if we don’t have a proper understanding of Kairos in our hearts, then we won’t be able to get through the darkness. We need to remember Romans 13:13 when it says that we should walk through the darkness as if it is the daytime. That is how to stay strong.
A theologian once said:
• Never speak evil of anyone
• Never seek revenge
• Never be ashamed of doing good
• Use your time wisely

As Christians we need to be professional. Professionals know their limits and their boundaries. They stay calm because they know what to do. They can see the whole picture and situation from beginning to end because they have practised it all and they believe that what they are doing is right. As Christians, are we professional? Can we see the big picture? Can we stay calm along the way?

As Kronos quickly passes by, are we truly searching for Kairos in our hearts? The night is nearly over and the morning is coming. But before that, the darkness will get deeper. We have to stay calm because the morning and the light will come. Let us shed all the darkness and put on armour of light.

Prepared Workers
2Timothy 3:10-17

Today is the when we appoint the new church positions for the New Year. God is looking for prepared workers. However, these days there are a lot of deceivers and evildoers, so it is hard to live a faithful life. Today’s verse is about Paul as he approached his martyrdom.

How do we become prepared workers in these last days?

1. We have to face difficult hardships and persecutions.

Persecutions distinguish between real Christians and fake Christians. At the end of the world, there are many deceivers and evildoers because Satan knows that there is not much time left. Jesus warns us about the Last Days because there will be many deceivers who will come to our churches and act as teachers and prophets. However, God will separate the Lambs from the goats. And so Christians will face a lot of persecutions in these times and it will be difficult to distinguish between the real Christians and the fake Christians.

To be a prepared worker, you need to have real faith; when prepared workers face hardships, then we can see their true character. Some people will avoid their work because they only live for their own personal advantage, and others will carry their crosses and take on God’s work. Prepared workers will be ready for hardships and persecutions. In Acts 13, Paul faced persecution. Mark left the mission when there were persecutions, but Paul didn’t give up and he went on to spread the Gospel. Paul was not shaken by dangerous situations; he was a rock of faith. And he even confessed that it was God who protected him from all the dangers.
As Christians, we have to be the same as Paul. Even if they have to sacrifice themselves, prepared workers will not be shaken.

2. Prepared workers have to acquire the power of Godliness.

“Strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,” they said.” Acts 14:22
In many modern churches, they teach “the gospel of prosperity” and promise their followers that they will have no more hardships. But in the last days, this is not true for Christians. In order to be a prepared worker, you have to live a life that is distinguished from the rest of the world. And even if you yearn to live a Godly life, it is hard to do in the Last Days.

These days, churches and Christians are losing power in this world, but God requires us to do even more of His work. As we saw from the missions, there is always more work to do. But there are more problems these days because Christians are living too much according to the ways of the world, and so they are becoming less prepared. When we do business or work for our employers, there are deceitful ways to do this work but Christians can not do this because they will become burdened by worry and guilt in their hearts and then they will not be able to do God’s work properly. Even if we miss going to church on Sunday, we will carry a burden too. If you don’t feel this burden, then you should wonder if you are a true Christian.

There are different levels of burden and sacrifice for Christians when they live according to God’s will. “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:1-2 As we go through these levels, we become true Christians.

Godliness is an attitude towards God. Godliness means getting closer to Jesus’ path and personality, and we become prepared through Godliness. We say that we pray everyday, listen to sermons, read the Bible, and study his Word, but we can’t forgive a small fault of our brothers. This means we have the form of Godliness, but not the power of Godliness. “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”1Timothy 4:8
We don’t get the power to forgive others all of a sudden; it requires hard training. Training means repeating the same thing over and over again. Our Godliness will only grow as much as we train.

3. Prepared workers of God have to reside in the Truth and Knowledge.

“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,” 2Timothy 3:14
Deceivers are the opposite of Christians. Evildoers and deceivers are the same; they seem successful, but that success is only worldly and temporary. They often have the loudest voices, and they can be pastors, too. It is the humble and quiet people who are walking the way of truth. We have to remain on this path without being shaken, and remain in God’s grace and love. Sometimes, Godly people get shaken by false deceivers and they lose their way. We should remain in the Truth. In Genesis, Eve fell from the Word because she didn’t have enough knowledge. Humans need a lot of training and teaching and spiritual teachers are very important. If Helen Keller was able to learn from her teacher, then we can all learn and be taught. Even if you have nothing to offer and have no special talents, if you study hard then you can be successful. We have to reside in Truth and Knowledge.

Even if we are immigrants who go thought hardships, we shouldn’t stop training ourselves. We can always keep learning and adding to our skills. How can we do God’s Work if we are not standing on the Rock of the Knowledge of God? We have to learn more about God’s Kingdom. Even as a pastor, I have to keep building up my skills and knowledge even though there are limited opportunities to do this in Korean in Edmonton. Even when our bodies and our outside selves are getting older, our inside person should be continually renewed though the years. If remain the same person over 10 years, then it is almost a sin. We have to change and improve over the years. We have to grow improve and study. We can’t blame outside circumstances if we are not growing. It is up to us. People in their 40s 50s and 60s have to work even harder when they want to learn and improve. It is easier when you are younger.

4. God’s Word prepares workers.

The Bible has the power for people to reach salvation. Only one book can truly heal your soul. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:17
Even if 40 different people recorded the Bible, God, through the Holy Spirit, is the true author. A murderer went to jail and when he was there he read the Bible and memorized it and his life was changed. The Bible changes people and a bad son will turn into a good son if he reads it.

The Bible has the power to teach righteousness, to change lives, and to give us the strength to do all good things in Christ. Without preparation, it is impossible to do God’s Work. I hope that you will all be prepared Workers. God’s Word is alive and it reaches us in our deepest places.

New Faith For A New Day
Luke 5:36-38
Isaiah 43:18-21

When students welcome the New Year, their timetables and teachers change, so when we all start a new year our faith should change too. We need new wine for new wine skins and we should repair old clothes with new cloth instead of old cloth. God can give us new clothes for the preparation. And so in order to become new people, we require new grace from God so that we can face a renewed life.

What can we do to become a new person in the New Year?

1. We must have renewed grace.

In this New Year, we need new faith and grace as people of God. “and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” Ephesians 4:24
We can change our positions and duties at church, but only God can truly change people. A person cannot change another person as deeply as God can. People change when they receive grace from God, and then they get renewed. A pastor makes a way for Christians at church to receive grace from God, but they have to decide on their own if they will receive that grace.

After we receive grace, we will see things differently than from before. We should never limit God’s ability; He knows us completely and so the grace that we receive is different from each other. Grace takes on a variety of forms from person to person, church to church and family to family. Not all grace is the same and it is diferent for every individual, but some people don’t understand why others serve God differently than themselves. People who reside in shallow waters don’t understand people who reside in deeper waters. In 2016, the Year of Bridal Preparation, God will allow us to experience grace more deeply than before. God will give us extraordinary grace and all of our prayer, worship and sermons will deepen this year.

2. To become renewed, we also have to look forward to 2016 with hope and grace.

Since the year-end service, I have been preaching about this great New Year being opened up to us by God. The Pygmalion effect means that you will get what you hope for and expect. If a teacher has good expectations about a child, then the child will behave. I hope for the best and expect big things for this church. Even when a child misbehaves, a parent should still expect big things. “The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever.” Genesis 13:14-15

God works according to the blueprint that He gives us, and it doesn’t cost us anything to believe in His plan. Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1

Faith is believing and looking forward with hope. Faith is also believing something is possible despite the obstacles. Why is Abraham the Father of Faith? Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” Romans 4:18
Abraham had many obstacles and God trained him, made him look forward, and gave him a son. No matter how hard your situation is, you have to look toward God. God’s test of Abraham shows us how much we can expect from Him. What can we do for God? How many missions can we do? We can do as much as we believe in. God wants us to see more than what has been given to us now. At the beginning of this year, what are we expecting and hoping for our family, children, self and church? You will be able to do it if you think you are able to do it, according to your faith. God is good and He always wants to give us the best so we must always chose faith in difficult situations.

We often do not have the patience to wait for god’s grace and His timing. It is because we are holding onto things in the past. “Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past”. Isaiah 43:18
We think about the past when we think too much about the good things and complain that they were better, and we think about the past when we think too much about the bad things and then give up hope for the future. God told Abraham to lift his eyes up from the past. As Christians, we have to quit the past that prevents us from seeing the future. As we focus our eyes on the hope of Jesus, we are moving forward. God has given us all the wisdom form His Words to live in this world and He gives us all the grace we need to flourish. If you are trapped in the past or in the present, then there is no room for God to act in your life.

In this 2016 Year of Bridal Preparation, a lot of new things will happen to us. These things will not happen because of the work of the pastor or from the work of the elders, but from the work of God. We need to open up our eyes of faith. God is preparing a deeper level of grace for us in the New Year. I hope that we will all have our eyes of faith opened. God has given me expectations that He will do great things in all of our lives. Your future should not be lessened because of your circumstances. Your future is in God. “I am the Lord your God,
who brought you up out of Egypt.
Open wide your mouth and I will fill it.” Psalms 81:10 God cannot fill us when our mouths are closed. “Ask me,
and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.” Psalms 2:8

2016 is a brand new year and it is new for everyone, so we all have the same opportunity. God is the one who will be guiding us and God is the one who tells us to lift up our eyes. Abraham obeyed God and so can we. I hope that every one of you will receive God’s grace and blessings so that you will leave your footsteps on this earth as Christians.

How Should We Live In The World
Revelation 19:7-8
1Peter 4:7-11

The advantage of Christians is that they have the ability to discern what they can expect and how they should live in the New Year. How should we expect to live this year? People fail and waste their lives not because of a lack of resources but because of a lack of discernment. When we discern properly, we are able to see God’s timing and the opportunities He gives us. “There is a time for everything” Ecclesiastes 3
“That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.” Psalms 1:3
A blessed person can recognize God’s timing and yield His fruits.

2016 is the year of Bridal Preparation at our church. “I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him.” 2Corinthians 11:2 We are meant to be brides of Christ and only the ones who have prepared themselves will be in the ceremony where God will give them fine linen to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. The end of the world is a time of increased speed of knowledge. And these days we constantly hear many stories about war, pain, confusion, and many natural disasters. This means that Jesus’ second coming is near and so we should prepare ourselves.
How do we as Christians prepare ourselves? “And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.” Romans 13:11 Some Christians are sleeping spiritually, but we are the children of God and so we can’t just live as non-Christians.
1. Be Clear-Minded and self-controlled so that you can pray.
“The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray.” 1Peter 4:7
Many won’t do this and they will easily fall into dissipation and so we need wisdom to know what to do. “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” James 1:5
Ask God for wisdom and He will give it to us. Only through prayer can we get this wisdom and strength to stay clear-minded. There will be a lot of temptations and a lot of tests in the Last Days. When we are busy, we need more wisdom and more of God’s help. Peoples’ bodies are weak. “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Matthew 26:41 Esau was so hungry he lost his senses. David lost his senses and sinned. People fail to keep themselves clear minded, but Christians should not lose their minds even in harsh situations. We don’t know when Jesus is coming back so Christians should always be clear-minded. “You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” Luke 12:40

This is the first Sunday of 2016 but we are talking about the end of the world so this may seem strange to you. But we can’t deny that Jesus is coming back and we should be ready for Him. We want to happily greet Jesus when He comes again so that we can enter into the wedding of the Lamb.

2. Love each other deeply
“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” 1Peter 4:8 Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs. Proverbs 10:12
In these last days, we have to be determined to love each other. If you see all the wrongs of others, then you are not loving them. And if you see all the good things of others, then you are loving them. When we look at water with a microscope and see all of the microorganisms in it, then we wouldn’t be able to drink it. We shouldn’t examine the faults of others too closely.

3. Offer hospitality and treat others as neighbours.

We should do onto others as they do onto us. “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 7:12 “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” Hebrews 13:2
4. Use the talents that God has given us.
We must serve one another with the spiritual gifts that we have been given. Ask God what gifts that He has given to you and pray for wisdom on how to use those gifts. We are responsible for the talents that God has given to us whether we know what they are or not.
I hope that we all can discern at the beginning of this year about how we should live in this world

Good news of Great Joy
Luke 2:8-20

Today is Christmas when Jesus came down to save us. “Merry Christmas” means to worship Jesus happily because “merry” means happy, “mass” means worship and “Christ”, of course, means Jesus. However, people forget this and just say Merry Christmas without knowing what they are saying. Some people, who are aware of the meaning, want to ban “Merry Christmas” and say “Happy Holidays” instead so that they can enjoy the festive nature of Christmas without getting bothered by the deeper spiritual dimension. It is important to preserve this phrase.

The news is important because it can affect a person’s day by making it happy or sad. If I say that I have really important news, people will pay attention. As we wrap up 2015, I wish that each of you will have joyful news at the end of the year. Today, we are celebrating the coming of Jesus and most pastors will use today’s passage about the first day of Jesus’ birth, which was Good News to all nations and all humanity.

Angels are the messengers of God and they only preach God’s Word. Many people proclaim God’s Word, but then often mix their own messages into it. That is why He sent an angel to proclaim it; so that it would be purely from Him. The message of the angel turned into he Gospel, which is the Good News of Great Joy. To believe in Jesus means accepting great Joy into your life and by accepting is joy, you are truly Christian. Who doesn’t want to be joyful? People reject Christianity because they don’t know that Christianity means joy, a joy that the world cannot give us.

There is joy in the world, but it is not true joy because it is temporary and it doesn’t last. The joy that God gives us through Jesus Christ’s birth is eternal and nothing can take it away from us. Happiness depends on circumstances and environment, but joy surpasses all circumstances. The ability to be happy without anything is joy. Jesus came as our Christ, which means Saviour in Greek. He also came as the Messiah, which in Hebrew, means The Anointed One. The Israelites had been yearning for the Messiah for thousands of years.

Why is the coming of Christ Good News?

1. The birth of Jesus is Good News because He came as the Christ

2. The birth of Jesus is Good News because he came as our Lord.

He has power over life and death. After Adam and Eve, we became servants of the devil, but after Jesus-Christ, we are now servants of God. This means that we can have joy in any circumstance.

3. Christ was Good News because Jesus came as our Saviour.

Jesus gave us freedom from all of our sins that humans couldn’t solve themselves. People are fundamentally sinners, but Jesus saved us from worry and fear and sins and diseases. Jesus saves people who are afraid and unhappy. We can’t overcome our hatred , addictions, disappointment and despair.
Jesus came to save us from these chains.
Jesus is light to save us fro dark. Jesus is life to save us from death.
Jesus is power to save us from curses and destruction.
Jesus carried the cross to save us from sins.

The shepherds heard the good news first. In Jewish culture, shepherds were at the bottom of society. They had to guard the sheep and so they could never go to the Temple on the Sabbath. They led very hard lives away from everybody, and were lonely. Even though we have a lot in our lives, we all have loneliness inside of us that nothing can fill. When we realize that we are living an empty life we can see that we are like the isolated shepherds. But the Good News came to the shepherds and threw their lives upside-down. “An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.” Luke 2:9

When the Bible says that God’s glory is somewhere, it means that His presence is there. We should be able to receive this great grace because we can’t save ourselves and do the work of God with our own knowledge and wisdom. At church, the different positions and jobs don’t come first; God’s grace must come first. We can only do God’s work when we receive God’s grace. And the best ways to receive God’s grace is through worship, prayer and receiving God’s Word. After we receive this grace, then we are transformed and our attitude changes through God’s power.

4. The coming of Christ was Good News because He came as Immanuel, God With Us.

“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”[a] (which means “God with us”) Matthew 1:23 Immanuel is Jesus’ other name. In other religions, People reach God through their own efforts. But Christians do not reach God on their own, because God gave us His only Son who came down to us in the flesh. He came to be with us.

How should we live when we hear this Gospel? Like the shepherds, we have to respond right away. Jesus came as our daily bread and he only works in those who accept this bread. Faith does not come through study and science. First we accept Jesus and then we get to know Him: not the other way around. God gave us free will to accept or deny this great news. If we delay accepting this news we may miss the second coming. Jesus came as a lawyer who defended us the first time and the second time He will come as a judge. A judge cannot defend you.

We have to spread the Gospel to our neighbours. It is news and so by definition, it is meant to be spread around. This is why we go on North missions; to spread the Good News of Jesus. We can see that no matter how hard our reality and circumstances are, we have to obey God and accept those circumstances that God has given to us. After we hear the Gospel, our circumstances don’t change, but we receive a joy that surpasses every difficulty. This is because the meaning and purpose of our lives has changed.

I wish that upon hearing the Good News of Great Joy, everyone of you is filled with praise for God, and filled with Joy.
