Godly Sorrow versus Worldly Sorrow

The Bible describes two kinds of sorrow for sin: godly sorrow and worldly sorrow.

2 Corinthians 7:10 says, “For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.”

Godly sorrow is the grief produced in the heart of a sinner causing him or her to realize that sin is a personal affront to a righteous God and loving Father. Godly sorrow carries an urgent conviction of sin and a deep sense of guilt and personal accountability before God. When properly responded to, this sorrow of heart results in life-giving repentance.

Worldly sorrow, in contrast, is the remorse and regret produced by the grievous consequences of sin, and not by sin itself. One cannot deny that sin is enjoyable, that it has pleasure in it; however, that pleasure is only for a season. In time the wages or results of sin manifest, and those wages are destruction and death (Heb. 11:25; Rom. 6:23). Worldly sorrow, mere emotional response to sin, does not result in “repentance to life” (Acts 11:18).

Repentance must go deeper than the soul (mind, will and emotions). It must affect the spirit of a person and reconcile the heart to God.

Repentance is an essential element in the saving process. It is a foundation stone of great importance in the building of a life in Christ.
Repentance is a complete change of direction in a person’s life, a thorough decision to turn from one’s own way to follow God’s way. It involves a radical abandonment of sin and a wholehearted reception of God. On account of the sin principle inherent in the fallen human race, every person is predisposed to wander, to seek his or her own direction in life.
Isaiah 53:6 says, “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way.”
Romans 3:23 says, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Every individual is desperately in need of salvation (meaning ‘rescue, deliverance, escape, wholeness, healing, and safety’).
Repentance is that act which turns man around and points him toward a holy God.
