Unitarian Church of Edmonton

Unitarian Church of Edmonton It’s nice to have you with us. Sunday Services 10:30am The Unitarian Church of Edmonton is a liberal religious community.

The Unitarian Church of Edmonton (UCE) is a welcoming congregation, this means our community is open to all without regard to race, gender, s*xual orientation, age, or income. It is a self-financed and congregationally-directed church. Our church is a member of the Canadian Unitarian Council. What We Believe

Freedom of Belief: We believe that each individual is responsible for exercising his or h

er own judgment in matters of religious faith. Discipline of Reason: We believe in a search for truth and right based on the weight of evidence, the thoroughness of reason and the impulse of compassion. Growth and Change: We believe that the mind and spirit grow through the quest for new truths and new meanings. Therefore, a spirit of trust and respect for the opinions of every person pervades our enterprise and outlook. Community and Diversity: We believe that every aspect of the endless variety of nature is related to every other. Not only do we value the interrelationships and those things held in common by humankind, but also we celebrate the differences among human beings, cultures and ideas. Principles & Sources of Our Religious Faith

Principles:
We, the member congregations of the Canadian Unitarian Council, covenant to affirm and promote:

The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large:
The goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all;
Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part
Individual and communal action that accountably dismantles racism and systemic barriers to full inclusion in ourselves and our institutions

Sources:
The living tradition which we share draws from many sources:

Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life;
Words and deeds of prophetic women and men which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion and the transforming power of love;
Wisdom from the world’s religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life;
Jewish and Christian teachings which call us to respond to God’s love by loving our neighbours as ourselves;
Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us against idolatries of the mind and spirit;
Spiritual teachings of Earth-centred traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature. Grateful for the religious pluralism which enriches and ennobles our faith, we are inspired to deepen our understanding and expand our vision. As free congregations we enter into this covenant, promising to one another our mutual trust and support.

June marks National Indigenous History Month in Canada, a time to honour the rich history, heritage, resilience, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. Their deep, enduring relationship with the land shapes every aspect of culture, health, and community well being. Animals are understood as close relations—beings who deserve respect, kindness, and gratitude throughout their entire lives. Reconciliation is inseparable from respect for all living beings and for the land we share, reminding us that healing must move forward in partnership with the natural world.

June is also Pride Month, and at UCE we have a full, joy filled month ahead. Next week brings our annual Flower Communion, a beloved tradition where everyone is invited to bring a flower to share. On June 21, we’ll gather for our Fabulous Pride service, and on the final Sunday, June 28, of the month we’ll wrap up the regular church year with a picnic in the park just across the street.

You are welcome to join us in our Sanctuary (10804-119 Street) or via online (please go to uce.ca for links).

We Love Pride in June and Every Day of the Year!

The first principle of Unitarian Universalism (UU) affirms “the inherent worth and dignity of every person.” This commitment has guided decades of leadership in advancing the rights, dignity, and inclusion of all people.

UUs have been at the forefront of 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion for more than half a century. In 1970, the UU Association became the first major religious denomination to officially condemn discrimination against homos*xual people. Since then, UUs have celebrated diverse s*xual orientations and gender identities as gifts that enrich our communities and spiritual lives.

Today, 2-Spirit, le***an, gay, bis*xual, transgender, q***r, and other gender-diverse people are welcomed as full participants in every aspect of UU life, including leadership and ministry. UU is also one of the most visible faith traditions supporting polyamorous and consensually non-monogamous families.

In 1969, Rev. James Stoll became the first ordained minister in a major North American denomination to publicly come out as gay. In 1988, the UUA ordained the first openly transgender minister in any denomination.

UU were also pioneers in marriage equality. Unitarian Church of Edmonton’s (UCE) minister, Rev. Brownlie, performed the first same-s*x marriage in Canada in 1973. UU congregations performed most of the first same-s*x marriages in provinces across Canada, decades before legal recognition.

During the 1980s, the UUA launched the Welcoming Congregation Program to help congregations address homophobia and later transphobia. UCE became the first Welcoming Congregation in Canada.

Today, UCE is a diverse community of free-thinking, spiritually curious people united in support and action. We welcome a wide range of beliefs—from theists and humanists to pagans, atheists, and agnostics. Together, we value compassion, community, justice, and the search for meaning in our lives.

For Unitarian Universalists, inclusion is not an accommodation to changing times—it is a direct expression of our deepest values.

The Unitarian Church of Edmonton strives to be a welcoming and safe space for all our 2SLGBTQIA+ siblings every day of the year.

"Representation is ever-evolving. Originally called “International Day Against Homophobia” to reflect the WHO’s decision on homos*xuality, the name has rightfully expanded—to reflect other identities and is now International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia.

Every year, advocates around the world call on local authorities, decision-makers, and the public to recognize and support the issues those with diverse s*xual identities, gender expressions, and s*x characteristics currently face."
