Vatican Appoints a New Archbishop

The Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, has announced the appointment of Most Reverend Stephen Hero as the Archbishop-Designate of Edmonton.

He will be formally installed as the eighth Archbishop of Edmonton on January 23, 2026.

We invite the faithful to keep Archbishop-Designate Hero in prayer, asking that he be blessed with strength of spirit, clarity of wisdom, and a humble heart as he begins his ministry among us. With gratitude and hope, we look forward to his leadership in guiding our Archdiocesan community in the years ahead.

We entrust this time of transition to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the intercession of our patron, St. Joseph.

The clergy, staff, and parishioners of St. Joseph’s Basilica extend a warm welcome to Archbishop-Designate Hero and assure him of our ongoing prayers and support.

Here's your chance to own a piece of St. Joseph's History!

When the old rectory was removed from the Cathedral grounds, its original Tyndall stone was carefully preserved. That stone has now been crafted into elegant bookends — each one a small piece of the St. Joseph’s Cathedral-Basilica story.

Each bookend is $200.00, which includes a history book and a tax receipt for $150.00 (issued at year end). They will be available after mass (ask Father Joseph) or through the parish office, with the proceeds supporting St. Joseph’s.

We are pleased to announce the season dates for Adoremus, beginning October 4, 7pm.
Adoremus is a beautiful encounter with Our Lord in Eucharistic Adoration, Solemn Vespers and the opportunity for individual Confession, concluding with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

Come and spend 90 mins with Jesus in the most Holy Sacrament of the Altar, together with many young Catholics from across the Archdiocese.

Archbishop Smith will offer the 10am Mass on Easter Monday for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis at the cathedral-basilica.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday at age 88.

A Prayer Upon the Death of the Holy Father

O God, who in your wonderous providence chose your servant Pope Francis to preside over your church, grant, we pray, that having served as the Vicar of your Son on earth, he may be welcomed by him into eternal glory.

Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.

Amen

Mass and Prayer for the Death of Pope Francis will take place at St Joseph's Cathedral Basilica at 10am today. It will be livestreamed on YouTube and Facebook.
