The period of their ministry (Revelation 11:1-4). By now the Jewish temple has been rebuilt, and the nation (though in unbelief) is worshiping Jehovah again. It seems likely that the two witnesses will minister during the first half of the Tribulation, preaching to the Jews and having access to the temple. At the middle of the Tribulation, Antichrist will break his covenant with Israel and take possession of the temple area (2Thessalonians 2:1-17; Daniel 9:27; Matthew 24:15).

The word “before” in Revelation 10:11 should read “concerning”; John would prophesy concerning many peoples, nations, tongues, and kings. We see the nations of the world referred to often in the next section of Revelation, for Satan will be stirring them up and getting them ready for the campaign of Armageddon (Revelation 16:12-14).

This digesting of the Word prepared John for his continued ministry as a prophet. What a lesson for us as witnesses! How tragic it is when we try to serve the Lord and speak for Him, without first taking time to appropriate His Word. Only that which is a part of our inner selves can ever be shared with others. How important it is for the saint to take time daily to read the Word and absorb it.

We enjoy the blessings of the Word, but we must also feel the burdens of the Word. John was blessed to know that God would fulfill His promises; but he felt bitterness as he realized the sufferings that would take place during the next three and one-half years of tribulation.

The eating of the little book had a two-fold effect on John: it was sweet to his taste, but bitter in his stomach, much like the effect of the two-edged sword of the Word (Hebrews 4:12). We enjoy the blessings of the Word, but we must also feel the burdens of the Word.

The Appropriation of the Book (Revelation 10:8-11). It is not enough for John to see this book in Christ’s hand, or even to know what it contains. He must appropriate it, make it a part of the inner person. Read Ezekiel 2-3 and Jeremiah 15:16 for similar events. The Word of God is our food (Matthew 4:4; Psalms 119:103); we must take it in and assimilate it before it can do us any good. It is good to read the Bible and study it; but we also need to memorize the Word and digest it inwardly through the power of the Spirit.

Some think that the “mystery of God” is contained in the contents of the little book. Perhaps it is. This much we know: God is in control of history and will ultimately see to it that right triumphs over wrong.

Mortal man cannot understand why sin and suffering are in the world, and why honest saints suffer while the rebellious sinners go free. We can be sure God will straighten these things out and complete His program. Note Revelation 11:18 especially — and take comfort!

This present period of delay is the sinner’s opportunity for salvation! Christ states that in the days of the seventh trumpet sound (Revelation 11:15-19), God will finish His program. The term “mystery” (Revelation 10:7) means a hidden truth from God.

The Announcement from the Angel (Revelation 10:5-7). This solemn scene begins as Christ lifts His hand and affirms that there will be delay (not “time”) no longer. The souls under the altar had asked, “How long?” (Revelation 6:10-11), and the answer is now given: there is to be delay no longer! Scoffers ask today, “Where is the promise of His coming? Why isn’t God doing something?” (2Peter 3:1-18) .
