West Africa: Celebrating Newly Translated Scripture

In April, there was cause for celebration among a people group in West Africa: the dedication of the New Testament in their heart language. Praise that these people now have physical copies of . Over 20 village chiefs and officials were in attendance and received a New Testament. Pray that this would open doors for church planters to these other villages. Praise God for enabling the translation team to complete this translation. The main translator passed away just a few months ago; praise God that she will receive her rewards in heaven for faithful service to the Lord. Pray that the 1,750 copies, which have been held up along their journey to the village, would arrive soon.

Jonathan and Susan Kopf minister among the Hewa people of Papua New Guinea.

Praise God that the printing of the Hewa New Testament is fully funded, and Lord willing, by the time you read this, the New Testaments will have been printed. The Bibles, the first ever printed in the Hewa language, contain the entire New Testament and 45 chapters of the Old Testament. The Kopfs planned to have a Bible dedication after their daughter graduates high school this month, but sadly both Jonathan’s mom and Susan’s mom in the USA are facing difficult health diagnoses. “Please join with us in praying that the Lord gives clear guidance on when we should return to Hewa to place these newly printed Scriptures into their hands.”

Aaron and Amy, along with co-workers Guy and Keyla and Bible translator Lesley, minister among the “G” people of West Africa.

They are teaching through Phase Two, the second round of chronological Bible lessons, this time focusing on descriptive teaching more than on prescriptive teaching. “The teaching under the tree makes progress, although slowly. We finished the last Old Testament lessons and also taught another lesson summarizing the whole Old Testament. Those who come more regularly to the teaching seem to track very well, and I believe they did get a much better idea of the big picture about what God was and is doing in this world. … We thank God for those ‘G’ who are interested in His Word and keep coming to listen to His Word.” Pray for understanding as they learn about who Jesus was and is — not an ordinary man, but God’s Son. “Please pray for strength, concentration and a leading of the Holy Spirit, as we choose passages from the Gospels for the next few lessons.”

Eric and Judith Hedeen minister among the Malaumanda people of Papua New Guinea.

“The Bible teachers have been going through the Creation to Christ teaching with the students that are in the local school, and after the gospel presentation, 61 elementary students gave a profession of faith in Jesus. Some of these kids are from our village, but many are from other villages where the gospel has not been welcome. Praise the Lord!” Pray that this will open the door to other villages. Pray for missionaries to go to these other villages. Pray for these elementary students to have opportunities to grow in the Word and in their walk with the Lord.

Tiffany Beachy is a teacher at Ramu Valley Academy (RVA) in Papua New Guinea.

The school has a unique role in fulfilling the — many of the students are the sons and daughters of national missionaries and church leaders, and the teachers at RVA strive to teach and disciple the next generation of church leaders in Ramu Valley. Tiffany shares that there is a need for more teachers, especially English teachers. There is also a need for construction workers to work on projects at the school. Pray that God would provide more labourers and that He would sustain the teachers currently at RVA. Pray that the believing students would grow in their walk with the Lord and that the unsaved students would place their trust in Jesus Christ.

Join Christians Around the World in Prayer at 1:11 pm

Today is the International Day of Prayer for the Unreached. At 1:11 pm today,* you can join in prayer with the Church by pausing whatever you are doing and taking a moment to pray for people groups who do not have the light of the gospel. According to numbers from the Alliance for the Unreached, still today there are 7,400 unreached people groups, or 3.4 billion people without access to the gospel. Pray that God would raise up Christians from among these people groups and cross-cultural missionaries willing to go to these people and share God’s Word with clarity and love. Pray that God would prepare their ears to hear and hearts to accept the one true gospel.

*Why 1:11 pm? The Alliance for the Unreached created a symbol — three tally marks, with one set apart from the other two — to represent the one third of the world who do not have access to the gospel in their heart language.

Equipping Indigenous Bible Translators Across Latin America

Rachel Chapman serves as a Bible translator in Mexico and as a translation consultant for Latin America. Indigenous churches in South America that have New Testament translations have been requesting training in Bible translation so teams from their churches can translate the Old Testament too. So, Rachel and 30 other translators and consultants met in Colombia for a translation workshop. Praise God that it was a productive and informative time. “Please pray for all the translation teams as they continue to translate God’s Word. Pray that they may understand God’s message clearly. Pray that they would communicate that same message accurately and naturally in their language. And pray that the indigenous churches would love God’s Word and grow in their relationship with the Lord through the newly translated Scriptures.”

Paul and Ellen Swenson, graduates of Ethnos Training, currently on home assignment, minister among the Tanguat people of Papua New Guinea.

The Tanguat church is continuing to send Bible teachers to the church in the “A and M” outreach location. Both churches are being taught through Acts. “Pray for wisdom and endurance for the Bible teachers as they shepherd two churches. Pray for the new believers at the outreach to think on truth and that God would keep the wolves away as they learn and grow.” Communication between the village and those outside the village has been unreliable lately, so pray for the Swensons as they consider different communication options.

1/3 of the World is Still Waiting: Pray for the Unreached

Next Sunday, May 24, is the International Day for the Unreached. Raise awareness about the unreached by sharing on your social media, and talk to your church or small group or plan with your family to set aside time* to pray for the third of the world who does not have access to the gospel. For most of us, we have heard the Good News so many times that we might become numb to the message, forgetting just how wonderful it is, but for those lost in sin and darkness without a way out, the news of a Saviour who loves them enough to die for them, defeating sin and death forever, cannot be more life-changing. Pray that we would remember just how great the Good News is today. Pray that God would raise up more Christians willing to pray, give and serve sacrificially so His Word can work in the lives of the millions of unreached people around the world.

*Many believers have chosen to pray at 1:11 pm on Sunday, May 24. (Think of the three ones as three tallies, with one set apart from the other two to represent the third who does not have the gospel.)

Pray for the graduating class at Ethnos360 Bible Institute (EBI). Some will be moving on to programs like Ethnos Training to be trained as missionaries, some will stay at the Bible school as interns and others will be moving on to other jobs and ministries. Pray that the things they have learned from Scripture during their time at EBI will stick with them for many, many years and that they will continue to be students of God’s Word throughout the rest of their lives. Pray that God would give them direction in next steps and that the graduates would trust in Him to meet their needs. Praise the Lord of the harvest for sending out more labourers into His harvest (see Matthew 9:38).
