We extend condolences and our deepest sympathies to family and friends of our dear friend and member, Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Mullen. ~Rev Sheila Redden-Smith

Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Mullen of Weymouth, NS, our Aunt Bet, passed away suddenly on May 9, 2026, at the age of 83. Betty was predeceased by her parents Hattie K. (Andrews) and Merle S. Mullen, brother Malcolm and sister-in-law Florence (Thibault). Betty leaves behind her nephew Andrew (Leanne) of Weymouth, NS and niece Anne (David) of Quebec City, QC and their families Benjamin (Mallory) and daughter Abbigail and Samuel (Olivia) Mullen, and Katherine (Takin) and Thomas Carberry. A very special friend to be mentioned at this time is Ruth Frizzell (Anthony) and children Simon and Oliver Frizzell.
Betty graduated from the Yarmouth School of Nursing in 1961 and began her career in Pincher Creek, AB. After working in both Digby and Yarmouth hospitals, she pursued a Master’s degree in community nursing. Her work as a VON nurse began in Kentville, Nova Scotia. Although she left the field, her desire to remain helpful and active never waned. Betty was a good friend to many, a willing and tireless helper in the community and an active member of many organisations. She was also a long-term member of the former Heartz Memorial United Church (Weymouth) and more recently of the Rivers of Grace United Church (Digby). She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered in the community.

Cremation has taken place and there will be a graveside service for all those who wish to attend on Friday, May 22, 2026, at the Riverside Cemetery, Weymouth North at 1:30pm. A reception will follow at the Royal Canadian Legion on Back St., Weymouth. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the TLC Animal Shelter, Digby.

A prayer of Portapique: Loving Spirit,
we remember the lives lost in Portapique,
and all those whose lives were forever changed.

Hold in care
those who grieve,
those who remember,
and those who are healing.

May we live with compassion,
with courage,
and with a deep commitment
to one another. May it be so.

“A Prayer in a Time of Rising Tension”

In this moment,
as tensions rise
and the world feels uncertain,
we pause.

We hold the people of Iran...
families, children, elders—
whose lives are not headlines,
but daily realities shaped by fear.

We hold all those caught in conflict...
those who did not choose this,
those who carry its cost.

We hold the lives of those sent into harm’s wayand the loved ones who wait and worry.

In a time when language becomes harsh,
when threats grow louder,
when fear begins to spread
may something steadier rise among us.

May wisdom be stronger than reaction.
May restraint be stronger than anger.
May humanity be stronger than power.

For those of us watching from a distance;
feeling helpless,
uncertain what to do
may we not turn away.
May we remain open,
compassionate,
awake to the cost of violence.

We hold this moment
with honesty,
with care,
with hope
that something different is still possible.
May it be so.

All are invited to hold this moment in their own way.
