It’s been 2,000 years since Jesus walked on the earth, and our world is still talking about him! History has never let us forget that Jesus made an impact in this world – and lots of people have lots of different ideas about who he was. But who did Jesus actually say he was?

There are eight times in the Gospel of John when Jesus said “I Am …” Last Sunday starting unpacking what Jesus meant when he said “I am the bread of life.”

Last Sunday I made a bit of a mess.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve led communion in churches now. But last week, I had a first. As I was getting ready to pick up the wine, I knocked it over, and it spilled all over the table!

It was a moment I was never trained for when studying to go into ministry. My church was very kind and understanding when I explained what had just happened. But as our service continued, I was struck by something…

We often make church and communion a very clean and polished display. And some of that seems very appropriate – after all, as followers of Jesus, whenever we have communion, we’re celebrating a somber and significant moment together.

But we’re also marking how Jesus sacrificed himself for us. And nothing about the cross was clean and tidy. In fact, it was gory and messy. And it’s in the messiness of our own lives that Jesus meets us.

Jesus said he didn’t come into this world to save the people who had it all together – he came into this world to save sinners. That’s why Jesus shed his blood on the cross.

This upcoming Sunday is Easter – when we mark and celebrate the fact that Jesus didn’t only die to save us, but came back to life to free us from the curse of sin and death. He came to raise us to fullness of life with him!

I want to invite you to join us this Easter as we remember and celebrate why Jesus shed his blood on the cross for us.

(I’ll try my best not to spill any more wine!)

Psalm 124: Song #5 for the journey!

The season of Lent is kind of like going on a pilgrimage. It’s a season of 40 days, patterned on how Jesus spent 40 days wandering and fasting in the wilderness – and as Lent leads us towards the cross and the empty tomb, it carves out space in our hearts to long for Jesus’ presence. During the time of the Old Testament, God’s people would go on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem three times a year – but they didn’t make that journey in silence! They turned to the Psalms to create a road trip playlist of songs for the journey.
