Elisabeth-Jane “Lisa” Ross traveled to Greece with a heart for people in need. She never imagined that her mission of service would end in a tragedy that has left her family, church, and friends grieving.

The 38-year-old Scottish woman arrived in Greece in June to volunteer with refugee support work in Athens. On July 18, her body was discovered inside a suitcase at an abandoned property in the Kypseli district. Greek authorities have charged 26-year-old Sharif Ahmadzai in connection with her death. He has denied killing Ross and has remained silent in court as the investigation continues.

But beyond the horrific circumstances surrounding her death, those who knew Lisa are remembering something far more powerful:

The way she lived.

Peter Anderson, lead pastor of City on a Hill Church, described Lisa as a precious member who had been part of the church for 20 years. He said her life was centered on mission, serving people, and caring for others around the world.

Her friend Magali Tassone, who served with her through YWAM, remembered her with words that capture the heart of her testimony: she said Lisa “truly incarnated the love and passion of Jesus” through her daily actions.

That is a legacy worth remembering.

Christian faith is not merely about what we say we believe. It is about what our lives become because we believe.

Lisa went where people needed help. She served refugees. She gave her time. She crossed borders to care for others.

And now, in the middle of profound grief, her life reminds us of something easy to forget:

We are not promised how many years we will have. We are given today.

So let us use it well.

Love someone. Serve someone. Pray for someone. Encourage someone who is struggling. Go where God has called you, even when the road is difficult.

Jesus said, “Let your light shine before others.” Matthew 5:16

Lisa’s story ended in tragedy, but the testimony of a life poured out for others does not disappear.

May God comfort her family, strengthen those who knew and loved her, and bring justice and truth as the investigation continues.

And may her life challenge us to stop postponing the good God has placed in our hearts to do.

Live faithfully. Love deeply. Serve willingly. Your life may speak long after you are gone.

Real hope for the hopeless.

Why would a Christian spend years writing about murder, crime, and humanity's darkest moments?

For bestselling author Andrew Klavan, the answer is surprisingly simple.

Because the light of Christ shines brightest when we understand the reality of the darkness.

Klavan, author of The Kingdom of Cain: Finding God in the Literature of Darkness, says his goal has never been to glorify evil. Instead, he wants readers to recognize it for what it is and discover the hope that only God can provide.

He believes one of the greatest mistakes Christians can make is pretending evil doesn't exist. Throughout Scripture, we encounter betrayal, violence, suffering, persecution, and the cross itself. The Bible never hides humanity's brokenness. Instead, it reveals God's redemption in the middle of it.

"When I look at the great works of Christian art, they're very dark," Klavan explains. "There's martyrdom, crucifixion, and the harsh realities of life." Yet those same stories point us toward hope because God is able to bring beauty out of tragedy.

His own journey to Christ began with a simple but life changing realization.

As a teenager reading Crime and Punishment, he became convinced that some actions cannot be justified.

"Some things are just evil."

That truth stayed with him.

Years later, after enduring a decade of severe mental struggles and even suicidal thoughts, Klavan says his life changed in what he believes was a miracle. Within two years, he went from despair to genuine joy.

Another turning point came while reading a novel in which a character prayed. Klavan thought to himself, "If he can pray, I can pray."

That simple decision became the beginning of a transformed life. He was eventually baptized at the age of 49 and says surrendering his life to God became one of the greatest reliefs he has ever experienced.

His message is one many believers need to hear today.

Faith is not meant to make us fragile.

Jesus never promised a life without suffering. He promised His presence in the middle of it.

The cross itself is history's greatest example that God can bring unimaginable beauty from unimaginable pain.

If you are walking through a season of darkness today, remember this.

The darkness is real, but it is never greater than the Light.

As Jesus declared in John 16:33, "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

That is the hope that has sustained believers for generations, and it is the same hope available to every heart that turns to Him today.
