The Cost of Sin

“When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”(Genesis 4: 12)

Sin always carries a cost. It may promise pleasure, power, or freedom, but it eventually brings pain and loss. In Genesis 4, Cain killed his brother Abel because of jealousy and anger. When God confronted him, Cain faced serious consequences. His experience teaches us three important lessons.

Sin disrupts our relationship with work and provision. God told Cain that the ground would no longer yield its strength to him (Genesis 4:12). Cain was a farmer, and the ground was his means of providing for himself. His sin affected his relationship with the very work that sustained him.

Sin still damages our relationship with work today. Dishonesty can destroy trust, laziness can reduce our progress, and greed can ruin a business. God calls us to work honestly, treat others fairly, and remember that our abilities and opportunities come from Him.

Disobedience leads to spiritual and emotional homelessness. God said Cain would become “a fugitive and a vagabond.” Cain would no longer enjoy the same sense of security and belonging. Although he remained alive, his relationship with God and others had been deeply damaged.

Violence and wrongdoing carry a serious cost. Cain's violence against Abel changed his life forever. He could not undo what he had done. His brother was dead, and he had to face the consequences of his actions.

Our choices matter. Angry words can wound, hatred can destroy relationships, and violence can bring lasting pain to families and communities. We must not believe that wrongdoing has no consequences. Instead, we should choose love, peace, truth, and forgiveness. Remember: Sin takes us away from God's good purpose, but repentance brings us back to His mercy. Let us choose obedience today and walk in God's ways.

Prayer for Today: Heavenly Father, help us understand the cost of sin and turn away from every wrong path. Guard our hearts against jealousy, anger, dishonesty, and violence. Teach us to work faithfully, treat others with kindness, and obey Your Word. When we fall, give us humble hearts to repent and seek Your forgiveness. Restore broken relationships and fill our hearts with Your peace. May our lives honour You and bring blessings to our families, our church, and our community. In Jesus' name, Amen….NBM

Today is Reflection Sunday. I invite you to take a moment with me to reflect thoughtfully on this past week's devotionals.

Avoid Unfruitful Works of Darkness: What hidden attitudes, habits, or actions must I abandon to ensure that my life reflects the holiness of Christ?

The Light That Corrects Our Way: How willing am I to allow God's Word to expose my errors, correct my decisions, and redirect my steps?

The Light Shines in the Dark Place: How can I allow the light of God's Word to overcome the darkness of fear, confusion, or sin in my life?

Your Body Is a Temple: In what practical ways can I honour God with my body, recognizing that I belong to Him?

Cleaning Our Hearts From Worldliness: What worldly desires, relationships, or priorities are competing with my love for God, and what must I surrender to Him?

The Evidence of a Christian Life: What changes in my words, attitudes, and behaviour demonstrate that I am becoming more like Jesus Christ?

Prayer for the Week: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word, which exposes darkness, corrects our ways, and guides us into truth. Search our hearts and reveal anything that dishonours You. Give us grace to abandon unfruitful works of darkness, overcome worldliness, and honour You with our bodies. Renew our minds and transform our character so that our lives reflect Christ. May Your light shine through us at home, at work, and throughout NBM. Help us walk faithfully in holiness and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen……NBM

The Evidence of a Christian Life

“But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.”(Colossians 3: 8 – 10)

Being a Christian means more than attending church, knowing the Bible, or identifying with a religious community. It means receiving new life in Christ and allowing that life to transform our character, conduct, and relationships.

Paul tells believers to “put off the old man with his deeds” and “put on the new man.” This is the language of changing clothes. Just as we remove dirty garments before putting on clean ones, we must deliberately reject the sinful attitudes and behaviours that belong to our former life.

First, a Christian must reject the old character. Anger, malice, abusive speech, and dishonesty are not merely personality traits to be excused; they are behaviours that must be surrendered to Christ. We cannot claim to represent the Lord while continually permitting these things to control our lives.

Second, a Christian must demonstrate a transformed life. The new life in Christ should be evident in our words, attitudes, and treatment of others. A changed heart should produce changed behaviour. We must learn to speak truthfully, respond graciously, forgive sincerely, and treat people with love and respect.

Third, a Christian must continually grow into Christlikeness. Paul describes the new person as being renewed in knowledge according to the image of the Creator. Christianity is not merely about abandoning sinful habits; it is about becoming more like Jesus through the transforming work of the Holy Spirit and the truth of God's Word.

Our testimony must extend beyond what people hear us profess on Sundays. It must be seen in how we live every day. The question is not simply, “Do I call myself a Christian?” but “Is Christ being formed in me?” Remember: A Christian is not someone who has grown above temptation, but someone who belongs to Christ and is learning how not to yield to temptation.

Prayer for Today: Heavenly Father, thank You for making us new creations in Christ. Help us put away anger, malice, dishonesty, and every form of corrupt speech. Renew our minds through Your Word and transform our character by Your Holy Spirit. May our words, attitudes, and actions reveal that we belong to Jesus. Give us grace to grow daily in Christlikeness, so our lives become living testimonies of Your saving power. Let our homes reflect Your holiness and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen….NBM

Your Body Is a Temple

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you…? Therefore, honor God with your bodies.” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20)

We often love helping others, caring for their needs, encouraging them, and being available whenever they call. But amidst caring for everyone else, we can forget to care for ourselves.

God has entrusted us with our bodies, and Scripture reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. Taking care of ourselves is not selfish it is stewardship. We need to listen when our bodies are tired, stressed, or overwhelmed. Rest, proper nourishment, exercise, and seeking medical or emotional support when needed can all be ways of honoring God.

Even Jesus understood the importance of rest and solitude. Luke 5:16 says, “Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” If Jesus made time to withdraw and be renewed, we should recognize that we also need moments of rest and restoration.

We must also ask ourselves: Am I so busy caring for others that I am neglecting my own family? Our families are not interruptions to our ministry. They are part of our God-given responsibility. 1 Timothy 5:8 reminds us of the importance of caring for our household.

We cannot pour endlessly from an empty vessel. Sometimes the most loving thing we can do is slow down, set boundaries, rest, and be present with those closest to us.

To honour God’s word, we need to learn to rest when we need to rest. Seek help when we need help. Set healthy boundaries. Spend time with our family. Listen when our body is telling us something is wrong. And above all, we are to invite the Holy Spirit to teach us how to live, not merely a life of service, but a life of wholeness, balance, and faithful stewardship.

Prayer For Today: Lord, thank You for the body and life You have given me. Help me listen when I am tired and recognize when I need rest. Teach me to care for myself without guilt and to honour You by caring for my body. Help me balance serving others with caring for my family and being present with those I love. Give me wisdom to know when to say yes and when to say no. Renew my strength, refresh my soul, and help me live a life that honors You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.🙏

The Light That Corrects Our Way

“For the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light; reproofs of instruction are the way of life.”(Proverbs 6: 23)

God has given us His Word not merely to inform us, but to direct, correct, and preserve our lives. Proverbs 6:23 presents three powerful functions of divine instruction: the commandment is a lamp, the law is a light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life.

A lamp helps us see where we are going when the path is dark. In the same way, God's commandments give us direction when life presents difficult choices. We may not always know what lies ahead, but God's Word gives enough light for the next step.

Light also exposes what darkness hides. Sometimes we need God's Word not simply to encourage us but to correct us. Hebrews 4:12 reminds us that God's Word discerns the thoughts and intentions of the heart. When Scripture reveals something wrong within us, its purpose is not condemnation but transformation.

Consider a driver traveling at night. The headlights do not remove the road's curves, obstacles, or dangers; they reveal them so the driver can respond appropriately. God's Word does the same for our spiritual journey. Therefore, we should not resist divine correction. Reproof is not rejection; it is God's loving intervention to keep us on the path of life. A person who welcomes God's instruction walks with greater wisdom, discernment, and safety.

Today, allow God's Word to illuminate your path, expose what needs correction, and lead you into the life God desires for you.

Prayer For Today: Father, thank You for giving me Your Word as a lamp and a light. Help me to welcome Your instruction even when it corrects what is wrong in me. Give me humility to receive Your reproof and wisdom to obey Your commandments. Search my heart and reveal anything that is taking me away from Your will. May Your Word guide my decisions, correct my steps, and lead me continually in the way of life. In Jesus' name, Amen.🙏

Avoid Unfruitful Works of Darkness

And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.(Ephesians 5: 11)

Christians often face subtle pressures to blend in during the Halloween season. In this season, the pressure to conform or to set aside spiritual discernment continues to grow stronger. Yet Scripture reminds us that our allegiance is never neutral. Jesus teaches, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14), meaning our identity must shine even when cultural traditions grow darker or spiritually confusing.

Halloween often celebrates fear, darkness, and the supernatural apart from God. While not every activity is harmful, Christians need to ask: Does this honour Christ or dilute my witness? Paul warns, “Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them” (Ephesians 5:11). Discernment is not about legalism; it is about loyalty to the One who saved us.

To be loyal to Christ involves standing firm in our faith, choosing to honour Christ above cultural pressures. It means recognizing that our spiritual discernment is an expression of our commitment to Christ’s Lordship. We are not just following a set of restrictive rules; we are declaring that light and darkness cannot dwell together. When Christians dim their spiritual clarity to blend into cultural celebrations, those around us lose the light meant to guide them toward Christ.

Living apart does not mean judging others, it means we are wise enough to stay focused on Christ, through whom we avoid the danger of sliding into darkness. If our focus becomes dim for a moment and we compromise, we risk the danger of being overcome by the god of this world. Our allegiance to Christ shapes how we engage with traditions, ensuring that our actions reflect faithfulness rather than conformity.

Prayer for Today: Lord, help me walk in clarity and courage during this season. Strengthen my heart to choose what honours You and to shine Your light without fear or compromise. Guard my mind from confusion and my home from influences that distract from Your truth. Teach me to walk in love, wisdom, and discernment, showing Christ in every decision. My allegiance belongs to You alone; guide me today and keep my steps aligned with Your Word. Amen. ….NBM

Standing on the Promises of God

“God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do?”(Numbers 23: 19)

To be able to stand on God’s promises firmly, we must know what God has spoken and who He is. Numbers 23:19 reminds us that God is not like human beings who may make promises they cannot keep. God cannot lie because lying is contrary to His holy and unchanging nature. Hebrews 6: 18 says “It is impossible for God to lie”.

When God speaks, His character guarantees His Word. His promises are stronger than our circumstances. Here are three promises that can carry us through this life. First, God promises His presence. “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). We may walk through valleys, but we never walk through them alone. God is always there for us, even in the darkest valleys of life. God’s presence gives us courage.

Second, God promises His provision. “My God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). This is the assurance we have that God knows what we need, and we will receive those needs because He is faithful.

Third, God promises eternal life. “And this is the promise that He has promised us - eternal life” (1 John 2:25). Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25). Our greatest assurance is not that this life will always be easy, but that through Christ, this life is not the end. Circumstances may change, but God’s promises remain anchored in His unchanging character.

Prayer for Today: Heavenly Father, thank You because You are faithful and cannot lie. Help me stand firmly on Your promises when circumstances are uncertain and my faith is tested. Remind me that You will never leave me, that You are my faithful provider, and that my eternal life is secure through Jesus Christ. Teach me to trust Your Word above my feelings and circumstances. Strengthen my faith, anchor my heart in Your truth, and help me live each day with confidence in Your promises. In Jesus’ name, Amen…..NBM
