Today we launch into the Season of Creation. But it's also the Sunday of Labour Day weekend where we hear from a member of our congregation about their reflections on their work and their faith. Lots to talk about! As Christians we all share the same basic vocation, to love our neighbour as ourselves. So maybe that's our common denominator today. How is all the work we are called to do a labour of love?

We've just enjoyed a week of VBS here at Good Shepherd. Lots of fun, energy, learning, and worship was enjoyed by all. And in the end we sent home a group of happy rebels. Rebels with a cause. The same rebels Paul describes and Jesus calls us to be in our gospel this morning.

"Who do you say that I am?" It's perhaps the most famous question Jesus asks in the whole Bible. It's also one that we never stop mulling over. Not because it's so confusing. But because there's so many different answers floating around us. Maybe that's why Paul urges us to be transformed in our minds today. Although that's easier said than done. So maybe Isaiah, finally, can come to our rescue.

As Christians we confess that Jesus was both divine and human. Although in practice, we tend to put the emphasis on the divine side of his nature. However, our gospel today he is a very helpful, if somewhat shocking, corrective to that tendency. After all, what could be more human than learning, growing, and changing.

Faith is at the heart of our lives as Christians. But Jesus never said it would be easy. One day we can be "in the zone with Jesus", and the next we can feel like we're sinking in doubt. And Jesus's rebuke of Peter in our gospel today, "You a little faith, why did you doubt?" Can fill us with more guilt than encouragement. But there is good news in this story, buried somewhere under those roaring waves!

In the gospel Jesus feeds the hungry multitude and reveals the abundance of God. And in our first reading God invites all who are hungry or thirsty to receive food and drink without cost. It's a day full of grace! The grace of a God who feeds us with the bread of life and sends us forth to give ourselves away as bread for the hungry.

In today's gospel Jesus offers everyday images that reveal to us the reign of God: a tree that becomes a sheltering home, yeast that penetrates and expands, a treasured pearl, a net that gains a great catch. Even as we seek the riches of God's reign, the great surprise is that God's grace finds us first.

It's an age-old question: Why is there evil in the world? In the parable of the wheat and the weeds, Jesus suggests that both grow together until the harvest. Which isn't much of a comforting or satisfying answer. But maybe it points us to where we can find our hope in the midst of a complicated and confusing world.

Join us August 24–28, 9:00 am–12:00 pm, for a week of adventure, songs, crafts, and stories as kids explore the nature of God - a safe place in life's storms, right in the heart of the rainforest.

🤝 Hosted jointly by Good Shepherd Lutheran and St Laurence Anglican
VBS is offered free of charge so every child can take part - donations of $40/child are gratefully received to help cover supplies and snacks, but are never required.
