Weekly Bible Bite: Acts 18:18-28

Video lesson:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=figEX3b7Gbo (Saddleback Kids Slapstick Theatre – Apollos)

After Paul had been in Corinth for 1.5 years, he travelled to Ephesus and took along his friends Priscilla & Aquila. When Paul decided to continue on, Priscilla and Aquila stayed in Ephesus where they met a man by the name of Apollos. He was a very good teacher, but they noticed something. He knew what John the Baptist had taught, but he was unaware of who Jesus was!

Priscilla and Aquila took him aside and spent time with him helping him to understand everything they knew about Jesus. Because Apollos recognized that they knew things he didn’t, he was willing to learn from them and he became an even better teacher. He then travelled to Achaia and was able to convince many that Jesus had been God’s promised Rescuer.

Family goal:
• Is there something that each member of your family is really good at that they can teach the other members of your family?
______________________________
[Be sure to pick a measurable goal involving a task so that children will know when they have completed it.]

Weekly verse:
Hebrews 10:24-25, NLT – “Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of Jesus’ return is drawing near.”

Family activities:
• Colour the picture of Apollos teaching.
• Can you make it through the maze to find Jesus’ cross?
• How much do you know about Jesus? See how many things you can identify. Ask others if they can add to your list.

Prayer:
Thank you, God, for Apollos’ example. He was a very smart man, but he wasn’t too proud to let others teach him something new. Help me to stay teachable too.

Paul Teaches in Athens
Acts 18:1-11,18, NLT
Then Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. 2 There he became acquainted with a Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, who had recently arrived from Italy with his wife, Priscilla. They had left Italy when Claudius Caesar deported all Jews from Rome. 3 Paul lived and worked with them, for they were tentmakers just as he was.

4 Each Sabbath found Paul at the synagogue, trying to convince the Jews and Greeks alike. 5 And after Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul spent all his time preaching the word. He testified to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah. 6 But when they opposed and insulted him, Paul shook the dust from his clothes and said, “Your blood is upon your own heads—I am innocent. From now on I will go preach to the Gentiles.”

7 Then he left and went to the home of Titius Justus, a Gentile who worshiped God and lived next door to the synagogue. 8 Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, and everyone in his household believed in the Lord. Many others in Corinth also heard Paul, became believers, and were baptized.

9 One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision and told him, “Don’t be afraid! Speak out! Don’t be silent! 10 For I am with you, and no one will attack and harm you, for many people in this city belong to me.” 11 So Paul stayed there for the next year and a half, teaching the word of God.

…18 Paul stayed in Corinth for some time after that, then said good-bye to the brothers and sisters and went to nearby Cenchrea. There he shaved his head according to Jewish custom, marking the end of a vow. Then he set sail for Syria, taking Priscilla and Aquila with him.”

Engage:
• Priscilla and Aquila were Jews that had been living in Rome. Why did they have to leave Rome?
• Paul travelled to Corinth and met Priscilla and Aquila who had recently moved to the city. What did they have in common?
• Every Sabbath, Paul would take a break from making tents to preach in the synagogue. What was he able to do when his partners, Silas and Timothy, arrived?
• After staying in Corinth for 1.5 years, Paul decided it was time to travel to a new town. Who went with him?

Weekly verse:
Hebrews 10:24-25, NLT – “Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of Jesus’ return is drawing near.”

2022 Theme verses:
Colossians 2:6-7, NLT – “And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”

Prayer – Dear God, thank you for good friends and for the fact that you give us people to encourage us, support us and work with us. Help us to be like Priscilla and Aquila who readily befriended Paul, opened their home to him and provided him with an opportunity to support himself. Help us to recognize people’s needs and be willing to help out as we’re able.

Week 41: Same Message, Different Responses (Thessalonica & Berea)
Weekly Bible Bite: Acts 17:1-15

Video lesson:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJsVLBVcoms (LifeKids - Paul and Silas in Berea)

After Paul and Silas left Philippi, they continued to travel from town to town. They ended up in a place called Thessalonica and people began gathering around Paul and Silas to learn about Jesus. But this made the Jews jealous…they wanted the people to listen to them! So they started a riot to cause trouble for Paul and Silas. Thankfully, Paul and Silas escaped and ended up travelling to Berea.

Again, Paul and Silas began teaching about Jesus and the Bereans did something the people in Thessalonica hadn’t. After they heard Paul and Silas teach, they would go to their homes and study more on the subject to see whether or not Paul and Silas were telling them the truth…and many came to believe them and followed Jesus!

When someone teaches us something that we didn’t know about God and His Word before, it is important for us to be good students and check it out. It doesn’t make sense to reject the truth just because we’ve never heard it before and it doesn’t make sense to believe something new just because someone tells us. It is good to be like the Bereans!

Family goal:
• Is there a topic that you don’t understand and would like to know more about? Try doing some research and see if you can find some answers!
______________________________
[Be sure to pick a measurable goal involving a task so that children will know when they have completed it.]

Weekly verse:
Acts 17:11, NLT – “And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.”

Family activities:
• Colour the picture of the jealous Jewish leaders. Draw Paul preaching in the picture.
• Studying the Scripture (the Bible) is a good thing for us all to do. Make a bookmark to use as you read.
• The Bereans spoke and studied the Greek language. Try and copy their alphabet.

Prayer:
Thank you, God, that we can be like the Bereans. You want us to study the Bible and learn more about you each and every day. Help us to understand what we read and find ways to explain it to others.

Today’s Lesson - “Paul Teaches in Athens”

Video Story/Resource:

Paul Teaches in Athens
Acts 17:16-34, NLT
While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was deeply troubled by all the idols he saw everywhere in the city. 17 He went to the synagogue to reason with the Jews and the God-fearing Gentiles, and he spoke daily in the public square to all who happened to be there.

18 He also had a debate with some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers. When he told them about Jesus and his resurrection, they said, “What’s this babbler trying to say with these strange ideas he’s picked up?” Others said, “He seems to be preaching about some foreign gods.”

19 Then they took him to the high council of the city. “Come and tell us about this new teaching,” they said. 20 “You are saying some rather strange things, and we want to know what it’s all about.” 21 (It should be explained that all the Athenians as well as the foreigners in Athens seemed to spend all their time discussing the latest ideas.)

22 So Paul, standing before the council, addressed them as follows: “Men of Athens, I notice that you are very religious in every way, 23 for as I was walking along I saw your many shrines. And one of your altars had this inscription on it: ‘To an Unknown God.’ This God, whom you worship without knowing, is the one I’m telling you about.

24 “He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, he doesn’t live in man-made temples, 25 and human hands can’t serve his needs—for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need. 26 From one man he created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries.

27 “His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him—though he is not far from any one of us. 28 For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ 29 And since this is true, we shouldn’t think of God as an idol designed by craftsmen from gold or silver or stone.

30 “God overlooked people’s ignorance about these things in earlier times, but now he commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to him. 31 For he has set a day for judging the world with justice by the man he has appointed, and he proved to everyone who this is by raising him from the dead.”

32 When they heard Paul speak about the resurrection of the dead, some laughed in contempt, but others said, “We want to hear more about this later.” 33 That ended Paul’s discussion with them, 34 but some joined him and became believers. Among them were Dionysius, a member of the council, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.”

Engage:
• Paul had travelled to Athens by himself and as he waited for his friends, he did some sightseeing. But what did he see that bothered him?
• He found an altar to an ‘Unknown God’ and decided to use it to introduce the people to Jesus. How did he do that?
• The people of Athens loved to listen to and debate new ideas. Where did they give Paul a chance to speak about Jesus? Why?
• When Paul introduced the idea of Jesus coming back to life, he got a mixed reaction. What were the different reactions of the audience?
• Some people believed what Paul taught and others thought he was crazy. Have you ever tried to explain to someone about Jesus? What happened?

Weekly verse:
Acts 17:11, NLT – “And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.”

Prayer – Dear God, thank you for Paul’s example. Help us to be just as creative when we try to explain about Jesus to others. Help us not to get discouraged if some people think we’re talking nonsense, but follow Paul’s desire to share the good news about Jesus.

Week 40: Paul and Silas Sing…In Prison!

On Paul’s second missionary journey, he and Silas travelled to Macedonia and were able to teach people about Jesus in the city of Philippi. Many people believed. But while they were teaching, a slave girl followed them and was very disruptive. The Bible tells us that she had a demon in her that helped her tell the future and her slave masters made lots of money from this. Paul became so annoyed one day with her constant disruptions, that he told the demon to leave. The slave girl was healed, but her masters were so annoyed they dragged Paul and Silas before the courts.

Paul and Silas hadn’t done anything wrong, but they were still beaten with rods and then locked in the inner cell of the prison with their feet locked in stocks. Paul and Silas could have become angry or fearful or depressed, but they didn’t do any of these things. Instead, they prayed and sang songs of praise to God. The other prisoners listened, probably pretty surprised by Paul and Silas’ thankfulness. But not as surprised as when God caused an earthquake to shake the prison apart and made it possible for all the prisoners to escape.

This was bad news for the jailer. He decided to kill himself, rather than face the punishment for having let any prisoners escape. But Paul and Silas told him to stop…they were all still there. The jailer took Paul and Silas to his home for food and medical treatment and decided to follow their God who had obviously helped them.

The jailer’s decision to follow Christ, along with his whole family, was as a result of Paul and Silas’ thankfulness, that caused them to praise and worship God, who sent the earthquake that freed them. God had used a bad situation and made something really good come from it!

Family goal:
• Is your family experiencing some difficulties? How can you remember to be thankful still?
______________________________
[Be sure to pick a measurable goal involving a task so that children will know when they have completed it.]

Weekly verse:
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NLT – “16 Always be joyful. 17 Never stop praying. 18 Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.”

Family activities:
• Colour the picture of Paul & Silas singing in prison.
• Complete the “I am thankful…” sheet
• Create a ‘thankful’ wreath and/or pumpkin to decorate your home.

Prayer:
Thank you, God, for all the good things we enjoy. Help us to be like Paul & Silas who didn’t dwell on their problems, but on you. They knew they could trust you no matter what situation they found themselves in. Help us to trust you always too.

Paul and Silas Lead a Jailer to Jesus
Acts 16:22-34, NLT
[After healing a slave girl, her owners caused trouble for Paul and Silas by claiming that the Christians were teaching things that were contrary to their beliefs.] 22 A mob quickly formed against Paul and Silas, and the city officials ordered them stripped and beaten with wooden rods. 23 They were severely beaten, and then they were thrown into prison. The jailer was ordered to make sure they didn’t escape. 24 So the jailer put them into the inner dungeon and clamped their feet in the stocks.

25 Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening. 26 Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off! 27 The jailer woke up to see the prison doors wide open. He assumed the prisoners had escaped, so he drew his sword to kill himself. 28 But Paul shouted to him, “Stop! Don’t kill yourself! We are all here!”

29 The jailer called for lights and ran to the dungeon and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 Then he brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.” 32 And they shared the word of the Lord with him and with all who lived in his household. 33 Even at that hour of the night, the jailer cared for them and washed their wounds. Then he and everyone in his household were immediately baptized. 34 He brought them into his house and set a meal before them, and he and his entire household rejoiced because they all believed in God.”

Engage:
• After healing a slave girl, Paul and Silas found themselves beat up and imprisoned. How would you feel if you were them?
• While in the prison, Paul and Silas sang songs of praise to God. As the other prisoners listened, what do you think they might have thought about these two who would choose to thank God even in prison?
• God heard their prayers and did something incredible. What happened?
• The jailer thought all the prisoners had escaped, but when he discovered they were still there, what did he do?
• Paul and Silas got to share the good news about Jesus and the jailer and his whole family became followers of Jesus. Do you think Paul and Silas thought this families’ decision was worth the pain of getting beaten and put in jail? Would you have the same reaction?
• This story just goes to show that you should never underestimate the good that God can bring out of a bad situation. With that in mind, what do you have to be thankful for?

Weekly verse:
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NLT – “16 Always be joyful. 17 Never stop praying. 18 Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.”

Prayer – Dear God, thank you for all the good things that you give us and also for the fact that you can make good things happen out of bad circumstances too. Help us remember to always be thankful, knowing that you will help us.

Week 39: Second Chances
Weekly Bible Bite: Acts 15:36-41

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpQ_ujrbZ-k (Veggie Tales – Jonah and the Whale)

We all make mistakes sometimes and need a second chance. John Mark had abandoned Paul and Barnabas in Cyprus, but Barnabas wanted to give him a second chance. Paul disagreed; he might have thought that John Mark needed a little more time before being asked to help them again. Either way, Paul and Barnabas disagreed and split up their team.

We can think this was a bad thing, but it actually resulted in two missionary teams—Barnabas and John Mark & Paul and Silas—to do the work of spreading the good news about Jesus. Both of these teams set off and continued the work of growing God’s Kingdom.

Years later, Paul recognized that John Mark had grown into a mature Christian and had the skills needed to be a good missionary. At the end of Paul’s ministry, he had come to depend on John Mark, just as he had Timothy and Titus. Even though Paul hadn’t been willing to give John Mark a second chance quite as quickly as Barnabas, he still did and John Mark proved very helpful after a little more experience. Read Colossians 4:10 and 2 Timothy 4:11 to learn more about what happened to John Mark. You may also be interested to know that John Mark was actually the writer of the Gospel according to Mark! He used his second chance well.

There’s not much in the Bible about John Mark, but another person that God gave a second chance to was a prophet named Jonah. God is definitely a God of second chances. The question is will we choose better the second time around.

Family goal:
• Can you think of someone who needs encouragement to ‘try again?’
______________________________
[Be sure to pick a measurable goal involving a task so that children will know when they have completed it.]

Weekly verse:
Ephesians 4:2-3, NLT – “Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.”

Family activities:
• Have a movie night and watch the Veggie Tales movie of “Jonah and the Whale.” Why did God give Jonah a second chance? Would you have?
• Colour the picture of Jonah and the whale
• Sometimes we treat people like trash…they make a mistake and we assume they’re no longer good for anything. Why not check out your recycling box to see what fun creations you can make to demonstrate the truth that nothing and no one is beyond having a purpose?

Prayer:
Thank you, God, that even when we make mistakes, you will forgive us and give us another chance. Help us to be like you when others make mistakes. No one is perfect and there isn’t anyone you won’t help if they ask you to.
