A short history of the NHSG
NORTHUMBERLAND HILLS STITCHERY GUILD·SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2018·

Chinese Proverb: “Tell me and I will forget, Show me and I may remember, Involve me and I will understand”. On May 28, 1985 a meeting of persons interested in forming an embroidery guild met at the home of Betty Kerr in Port Hope. Members of the Toronto Stitchery Guild made presentations and information w

as given on the workings of Embroidery Association of Canada. A subsequent meeting was held where plans were drawn up to form a guild in the Northumberland area and the first meeting was held on June 25, 1985 at the Port Hope Town Hall, Red Cross Room. At that time there were 24 charter members who met the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, with Betty Kerr as the first President. By 1986, membership having grown to 27, meetings were moved to a larger hall at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Cobourg. Another move was taken to the auditorium at the Golden Plough before settling into our present location at the Lion’s Club Community Centre in Cobourg. The NHSG has celebrated over 30 years encouraging and promoting an interest in the art of embroidery, needlework and creative stitchery! Join today to “remember and understand” in our open and friendly community.

This is the Northumberland Rug Hookers biannual event. Based on what I have seen at Cobourg Creates, their work will be beautiful!!!

P.S. I’m still in love with the hooked waste paper basket they had at a recent event!

After Susan C. finished off the "Stitch Bingo", she started a new project of leading us into the world of chain stitch variations. In the photos you can see Iran's (hands) working through the Hungarian Braided Chain Stitch and Immy watching Sharon E. poking the fabric (and not her fingers!).

Oh! Oh! Do you know what happens in a couple of weeks? The Trent Valley Quilters' Guild show! Over time, quilts have moved from household necessities to pieces of art. So if you are in Brighton on June 6 or 7th, you might want to drop in and see people can do with small pieces of fabric.

Susan C. led a game of "Stitch Bingo". Each participant would chose some stitches (from a limited number) to learn and then over the subsequent weeks, Susan would select stitches. If the participants' and Susan's matched, then the participants would fill in that square. The first participant to fill a row, column, diagonal, or card would win a small prize and LARGE bragging rights. Here are some of the entries.

Iran taught us a class in Sisha or mirror work. She has made some beautiful jewelry as well as decorated a tote bag. The red or second photo is a cool combination of two embroidery techniques: Sisha and cross stitch.
