The first two days of Po Lam’s Auspicious Blessings Chanting Ceremony were devoted to the profound and beautiful Avatamsaka Repentance Ceremony, presided over by Venerable Xin Yuan, Abbot of Miao Ju Temple in Rosemead, California.
Listening to the monks’ deeply mellifluous voices rise and fall throughout the ceremony was a truly rare and extraordinary experience. Their beautifully resonant and skillfully practiced chanting seemed to move like a symphony through the hall, creating an atmosphere of deep reverence and contemplation.
Based on the Flower Adornment Sutra, also known as the Avatamsaka Sutra, the ceremony centers on the final chapter of the Sutra and the Ten Great Vows of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. The fourth vow is devoted to confession and repentance of karmic obstacles. Through these vows, we turn inward, acknowledging our actions and cultivating the aspiration to align body, speech, and mind with compassion.
The practice invites us to reflect upon and purify the three avenues through which we create karma: our body, our speech, and our mind. Through repentance, prostrations, offerings, and sincere reflection, we seek not simply to ask forgiveness, but to recognize our habitual patterns, take responsibility for our actions, and make a sincere commitment to change.
Those gathered honored the Sea-Vast Flower-Adornment Assembly—a profound visualization of an infinite universe filled with countless Buddhas and Bodhisattvas—as witnesses to our vows and our aspiration to transform.
For everyone who participated, it was a deeply personal and reflective experience. We are profoundly grateful to Venerable Yin Kit and Venerable Yin Tan for inviting Venerable Xin Yuan and his Sangha to bring this ceremony to Po Lam for the first time. Their voices, their practice, and the sincerity with which they led us through the ceremony made these two days truly memorable.
At the close of the ceremony, Venerable Xin Yuan spoke warmly of Canada and of Po Lam, describing it as a beautiful, peaceful, and tranquil place of practice. He offered a heartfelt wish that everyone present might live to 120 years—with many more years of practice, cultivation, and service, and many more years of supporting and nurturing Po Lam.
A beautiful blessing with which to conclude these precious days.
Sadhu, Sadhu, Sadhu.
